CAMPUS and HOUSE NAME ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dear Parents Guardians, Students and Staff
It is with great excitement and new possibilities that I write this issue of Frayne Today.
During Term Three and Term Four 2024 the college undertook a review of our current house system with a view to create a K-12 House structure. As a result, the college has restructured its house system to be six houses in total across K-12. In addition to naming the six houses, consideration was also given to name the two college campuses.
The process of choosing meaningful campus and house names will play a significant role in fostering a deeper sense of community, belonging and unity throughout each student's educational journey from Kindy to Year 12, or Years 7-12 for students who join the college in Year 7. It is also an opportunity to capture our college history as well as to create new stories.
In naming the campuses and houses the following considerations guided the final decisions:
- The history and traditions of our college.
- Notable historical saints or blessed figures.
- Names that highlight inclusivity and diversity.
- Adherence to the College naming policy and CEWA directives.
- A balance of male and female names.
TWO CAMPUSES
From 1 January 2025 our two campuses will be referred to by the names of the two Colleges that amalgamated in 1986 to form Ursula Frayne Catholic College.
I confirm the following names have been approved by the College Advisory Council and the Director of Religious Education at Catholic Education Western Australia:
XAVIER CAMPUS | K - 6
The Balmoral Street Campus will be known as:
Ursula Frayne Catholic College | XAVIER CAMPUS
Xavier captures the name of Xavier College, which was the name of the all-boys college based at Balmoral Street. It is hoped our Xavier College Alumni will feel connected to their college through this recognition.
JOACHIM CAMPUS | 7 - 12
The Duncan Street Campus will be known as:
Ursula Frayne Catholic College | JOACHIM CAMPUS
Joachim captures the name of St Joachim's school, which was the name of the all-girls school based at Duncan Street. It is hoped our St Joachim's College Alumni feel connected to their college through this recognition.
SIX HOUSES
Ursula Frayne Catholic College honours its heritage by naming houses after influential Catholic figures. Six names have been chosen. Four of the names are current house names and two new names have been introduced.
Rice House (Current House)
Honours Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, dedicated to the education of the poor. Rice House keeps our community connected to the Founder of the Christian Brothers who were the founding order of Xavier College on Balmoral Street.
His faith in action through serving the community shows a deep commitment to being a person for others.
McAuley House (Current House)
Honours Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, known for her work in education and social services. She embodies deep compassion, service and care for others.
Catherine McAuley, along with Edmund Rice, keeps our community connected to the founders of two religious orders of the amalgamating schools that form Ursula Frayne Catholic College.
MacKillop House (Current House)
Pays tribute to St. Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint and founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. St. Mary MacKillop was committed to social justice and education for the marginalised.
MacKillop House is a current House in our Junior and Middle School.
Siena House (Current House)
Named after St. Catherine of Siena, a renowned theologian and Doctor of the Church. Her spiritual leadership exemplifies the pursuit of excellence.
Siena is a current Senior School house and will continue to inspire a culture of excellence in all we do and the relationships we have in all our lives.
Columba House (New House)
Celebrates St. Columba, an Irish missionary known for spreading Christianity in Scotland.
The Sisters of Mercy originally wanted St. Columba to be the name of their school in Victoria Park but they were overruled by Pope Leo II who directed the school to be named St Joachim's. This was met with great disappointment to the Sisters.
St. Columba’s missionary work and welcoming spirit reflect his faith commitment, courage and hospitality towards others.
Salvado House (New House)
Named after Bishop Rosendo Salvado, a pioneer in education and missionary work in Western Australia. Salvado and Ursula Frayne both arrived in Perth together in 1846 to establish missions.
Their shared commitment to serving the local community and Indigenous populations created a lasting connection between their respective missions. Salvado's respectful approach to working with Indigenous communities highlights his commitment to inclusion and respect for others.
Salvado was a great support for the Mercy Sisters when they arrived in Western Australia.

We will provide further information at the start of 2025 as to how we will transition to new house shirts for all students. In the interim, students may wear their current house shirts or sports shirt.
10. House Spirit Cup activities begin | Week One 2025.
CAMPUS IDENTITY PROJECT
In the process of reducing the number of house names to six, two current house names have not been included. Buggy House and Bosco House are house names in the Junior School. The importance of these names is recognised, and as part of the Campus Identity Project these names will be considered for the names allocated to college buildings and spaces, college competitions, programs and awards.
Parents and Students will be kept up to date as we progress our transition to the new house structure. We look forward to our students embracing the opportunities that will be presented through by the House system as we enter a new era at the college.

ONE COLLEGE
A great strength of our college is its K - 12 structure. Whilst we are on two campuses that provide age-appropriate learning opportunities for students we must continue to seek ways to enhance our K - 12 identity. Our K - 12 house system is an important initiative to create a greater sense of belonging and unity.
