January 2025 Newsletter
A Message from the Principals
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We trust that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Christmas Break. We are excited to be back at school and continue the awesome learning that started in fall. Some exciting events are coming up in the coming months, the biggest of which is I Love to Read Month in February. We will be having guest readers, fun reading challenges (prizes!) and some special activities to encourage and celebrate reading. There is the book fair of course! This is always a highlight of the month - see more information below.
We encourage parents to read through the newsletter carefully as there is a lot of important information found in here. And if you have any questions, please make sure to be in touch with your child's teacher by email or SeeSaw or contact the school office (woodlawn@hsd.ca).
Mr. Vince Hiebert - Principal
Ms. Marla McEachern - Vice Principal
Parking Reminders
If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please park on Henry Street or on the church parking lot across from the school. When using the church parking lot please do not block entrances or exits. For the safety of your child, we request that you escort your child across Henry Street. For students’ safety, please avoid parking along Barkman Street across from the school during 8:30 - 9:00 am and 3:30 - 4:00 pm.
Snow Hills
Students should not be playing on snow hills in neighboring parking lots on their way to/from school. Parents, please ensure your children come home first before heading out to play. Parents, if you are picking your students up at school we ask that they not play on the snow hills in the parking lot across from the school as this is a high traffic area and we don't want students sliding off the hill into traffic. Please save this sort of play for the evenings or on weekends. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
A Message from the School Counsellors
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful break and are ready to start the year with excitement and new possibilities.
The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the things we’ve learned and think about what we want to achieve in the year ahead. Whether it's making new friends, trying your best in school, or being kind to others, remember that every small step you take helps you grow and become even more amazing
Feel free to print the crossword below and work together with your child on the emotional words puzzle.
Mrs. Mackie
Medication
If your child needs medication, please note that over-the-counter medication is not be be sent to school in your child's backpacks or lunch kits. All over-the-counter mediation (including Advil and Tylenol) needs to be administered by a parent/guardian.
In order for prescription medication to be administered by staff, parents need to bring it in the original container/box with the label on. There are forms at the office for parents/guardians to fill out. We ask that as much as possible, medication be administered at home rather than at school.
2025 - 2026 Kindergarten Registration
Online Registration for Kindergarten
Kindergarten registration for the 2025-2026 school year will open on January 6, 2025. To be eligible, Children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2025. The registration process will take place online at www.HSD.ca.
If you do not have access to the Internet, please visit the school office and we can assist you in completing the registration on a school computer. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to register their children soon after registration opens in January. Early registration will assist us in preparation and planning for the upcoming school year. Registering before March 1, 2025, will ensure there is sufficient time for school appointments and provide parents/guardians with the opportunity to participate in Kindergarten orientation activities. Visit www.HSD.ca for registration instructions.
When Your Child Is Sick
If your child is sick and will not be attending school, please let us know before 8:40 am. You can either use our parent portal, email Woodlawn@hsd.ca, or call the school at 204-326-6110. Your help in letting us know your child will be absent is greatly appreciated!
Outdoor Play in Winter
At Woodlawn, we believe it is important for all students to spendtime playing outside every day. It is important to get fresh air, be exposed to sunshine (Vitamin D!) and to have some unstructured, fun play in their day.
Our goal is to get students outside every single day, while also ensuring they are doing so in a safe way. Hanover School Division's Cold Weather Protocol is included below and we do our best to stick to it.
How can you help? Ensure your child is dressed for the cold weather. Even if it looks like it may be too cold for outdoor recess, please continue to send your child with the proper outer wear as if the temperatures warm up enough to go outside, we will do so!
In addition, our belief at school is that if children are too sick to go outside, they are also too sick to be at school. We will send all children out for all applicable recesses. Exceptions are rare and must be approved by the school principal.
Cold Weather Protocol
If local conditions indicate that with the wind-chill the temperature is -30 or colder we have indoor recess. When temperatures with wind-chill range between -25 to -29 we normally have a shortened outdoor recess during the activity block.
As we all know the weather in Manitoba can change from one moment to the next. The main reasons students find winter outdoor recesses too cold is that they do not dress warmly enough or they do not get active enough. Please send your children dressed to deal with the elements. Good boots, mittens, and a hat added to ski pants and a parka makes all the difference between a child enjoying the outdoors or tolerating it. Please label all your child's outwear items as our young students often lose or forget items in various places!
School Closure Notifications
When extreme weather or road conditions call for a school closure you will receive a recorded phone call from Superintendent Joe Thiessen beginning at 6:45 am. This additional communication effort is to help ensure that all students will be aware of school closures and no students will find themselves in an unsafe situation where they may be facing extreme weather unnecessarily. When school is cancelled due to weather and road conditions there are no staff members at the school. If your phone number has changed since the beginning of the school year please call the office at 204-326-6110 to update your information.
Schools will be closed due to extreme cold when the temperatures in most locations in the division are –35 degree Celsius or colder or –45 degree Celsius or colder wind-chill.
