Scoring Workshop
- Know the Rubric. Unpack the rubric to determine what the student needs to do (verbs) and what the student needs to know (nouns). Then, examine the qualifiers, i.e., to what degree of expertise (always, sometimes, often, etc.)
- Teach the Rubric. Go through a similar, scaffolded process with the students and create a student-friendly rubric for display.
- Practice Using the Rubric. Using gradual release of responsibility, examine scoring criteria for levels 1-4 utilizing verified state-released sample essays.
- Use the Rubric. Score additional verified state-released sample essays before evaluating peer and self.
