The Viking Spotlight is the part in my weekly newsletter used to highlight and celebrate our students and staff anytime we can! Screaming CONGRATULATIONS to our varsity basketball team for winning the South Bay League championship this past Saturday!!🙌🏽🤗👏🏾 I'm so proud of all of you on your hard work and dedication this season! 🏀 This is the 3rd year in a row that our basketball team has earned this title!!🏆 Thank you, Coach Ortega, for leading our team to the ultimate victory!🎉 Click HERE to watch a brief video of the moments after they won!

It was another busy week at MVA last week. From Halloween Trick-or-Treating to Dia de los Muertos activities to VALOR Fall Sports playoffs, there was a lot happening! The most important part of all of these activities is that Vikings were having fun! 🤗

I want to give a shout out to the Softball team 🥎 on making it to playoffs! They played hard on Saturday, and even though they weren't able to secure a win, I'm so proud of how far they have come this season! Great job, ladies! 👏🏽 I'd also like to congratulate the JV basketball team 🏀 for winning their consolation game on Saturday! 🤗 You guys worked hard and played together as a team...great job! I'm looking forward to great things next year!

We are finally in November and that means there are 9 school days (4 this week and 5 next week) before Thanksgiving Break. Let's make these 9 days count, Vikings! Remember, you must pass all of your classes in order to participate in the Promotion ceremony at the end of 8th grade! So it is better to be safe than sorry and do the work NOW to keep your grades afloat! You got this, Vikings! 💛

Last week's newsletter contained Keys to Viking Success for the students. This week, we are focusing on how our parents/guardians can help our students succeed at MVA! Take a minute to read the Counseling Center's flyer HERE or read below for tips on how to best support your child's academic success!

On Thursday, the library hosted a Dia de los Muertos event for our students throughout the day and during lunch! 🤗 Classes visited and toured the ofrendas, did a scavenger hunt, and learned about the history of Dia de los Muertos!🕯 At lunch, they were able to get face tattoos, make flowers, and take selfie with a special guest (I got one!). Thank you to our library tech, Ms. Martinez and English teacher, Mrs. Bailon for putting on this great event for our Vikings! 💛 Click HERE to view more pictures!

I am so excited for our second Viking Recognition event of the year is coming up thisTuesday, November 7th at 8:30am. At this event, we will recognize the Viking students who achieved one or more of the following:

• Perfect Attendance (no absences or tardies from 9/5 to 10/27)
  
• Most Improved Viking (nominated by a teacher to have shown improvement in the first quarter)

Parents/Guardians of those students being honored received an email last week and will get a paper invite tomorrow! We can't wait to celebrate our Vikings!

SUHSD Superintendent, Dr. Moises Aguirre stopped by MVA last week for a visit! 🤗 He spoke to our parents who were here for Coffee with the Principal, we discussed the great things happening at MVA, and then we visited some classrooms to showcase Vikings learning in action! 💛 I appreciate the support Dr. Aguirre always shows Mar Vista Academy! Thank you, Dr. Aguirre, we'll see you again soon! 😊

The Sweetwater Union High School District Black Student Unions would like to cordially invite all SUHSD middle and high school students, parents and staff to attend our first BSU Black Talk event, on Wednesday, November 8th at Hilltop High School from 5:30-7:00pm. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have a safe space to share their experiences of being a Black student in today's world. We hope to empower our students to use their voices and know that they are seen, heard, valued and have supports within our district to help them succeed. In an effort to help support our MVA students, we welcome any donations of school supplies and/or money. All funds would go directly to supporting our MVA students in the form of spirit shirts, celebrations, recognition awards, school supplies, and more.
