Nurse's Corner Health News
Soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers for hands?
Both alcohol-based hand sanitizers and hand-washing are effective ways of preventing disease, but remember these important facts:
· Hand sanitizers are not as effective when dirt is visible on hands. Hand washing with soap and water, singing the “Happy Birthday” song, should be used to remove the oil and grime where bacteria can live.
· Hand sanitizers should not be used in place of soap and water:
ü when preparing food
ü after restroom use
ü changing diapers
· Hand sanitizers will not work in killing certain viruses or bacteria such as:
Ø Cryptosporidium - causes diarrhea.
Ø Norovirus – causes stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up.
Ø Clostridium difficile – causes watery diarrhea
Clean hands are one of the best ways to prevent infection or disease. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/handwashing/

DISTRICT INFORMATION
Parent Partners
Would you like to have a voice in our school district? The English Learner and Dual Language Department is inviting parents of English Learners to join us. We will get together on Tuesday, December 3, at the Education Service Center (627 4th Street) at 12:00 noon for a light lunch together and a conversation about the education journey of your son or daughter. If you don’t want to talk, that’s fine – just come and listen. Please let us know if you can attend by calling 712-279-6840 before November 22. Se habla español.
Dressing for Cooler Weather
With the cooler temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder winter. Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual, so it is important that students have the right winter weather clothing. When the temperature feels like 15 degrees or lower, students are kept inside for recess and activities. Students should be prepared for the cooler weather with a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. If your student does not have access to cold-weather apparel, please contact our school office.
Inclement Weather Reminder
The weather in Iowa can be unpredictable. If the weather requires us to delay the start of our school day, cancel school for the day, or dismiss school early, information will be sent to families through email, text, and voicemail. In addition, this information is posted to our social media sites and the District website.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.
Update your contact information!
The District and our school are continuously updating families on important school information, closings and cancellations, and other announcements. Information is shared through email, phone calls, and text. Make sure we can connect with you by keeping your contact information updated in our records. If you need to change your contact information, please contact the school office.
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is paramount. The District uses Standard Response Protocol or common terms to communicate our actions and response to an emergency situation. The terms Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter are used so students, staff, and first responders understand the situation and how best to respond.
We encourage families to become familiar with these terms to better understand our school’s response and what to expect in a crisis situation. For more information on safety preparedness within the District, visit siouxcityschools.org.
