Principal's Corner
Hello Natoma Station Families,
Solar Eclipse: Monday, April 8
We want to ensure you are well informed about the upcoming solar eclipse scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow on the earth's surface. We are both excited about the chance to witness this rare astronomical event and committed to ensuring the safety of students who will still be at school during this time. In Sacramento, the eclipse is expected to begin at 10:16 a.m. and conclude around 12:18 p.m., with its peak occurring at 11:15 a.m. when the moon will partially obscure the sun.
Safety for Students During the Solar Eclipse
Ensuring the safety of our students during the solar eclipse is critical. If recess or lunch times fall within the solar eclipse window, we will keep students indoors. Students will be instructed to look down and they will be closely monitored when they are transitioning between classes/spaces. We kindly request that parents review safety procedures with their children, emphasizing never to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection.
Solar Eclipse Eye Safety Facts and Information (How to Safely View the Solar Eclipse)
Looking directly at the Sun without proper eye protection is unsafe. It is ONLY safe to look directly at the Sun through special solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses,” that comply with the transmittance requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Activities
A few of our classes have planned solar viewing activities. In order for your child to participate, parents must sign our district's permission form and return it to school. In addition, all glasses that will be used comply with the transmittance requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Other classes have chosen to focus on indoor activities to learn about the solar eclipse. If your child's class is not participating in an outdoor viewing activity and you would like for them to view the eclipse, you are welcome to sign them out to view the eclipse with your child. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all our students during this remarkable astronomical event.

Summer break and high school graduation are just two months away. April offers a wonderful opportunity to attend virtual presentation by guest speaker, Shari Egeland, Associate Director of Omni Youth Programs.
- Graduation and Beyond (April 2nd, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, zoom presentation) Shari Egeland, M.S., M.F.T. shares tips to encourage a drug-free lifestyle as your child prepares for college and independent living. As youth transition into adulthood, they continue to benefit from the foundation of their family. Kinder Parents ~
If you have not already done so, please return your student’s Oral Health Assessment Form to the NSE health office no later than Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Education Code Section 49452.8 requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31, in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school. Assessments that have occurred within the 12 months prior to your child entering school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional must do the assessment.
Please call or email the NSE health office with any questions or concerns.
Thank you!
Integrity is our Character Trait for April
