Henry Hawk News
Week of May 25, 2020
Principal's Message
This Monday, May 25, 2020 is Memorial Day. This day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who had died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This is also the weekend where Chicago officially begins their summer activities. Unfortunately, as a city we won't have those opportunities due to this unprecedented time.
That being said, I am sending out our Henry Hawk News earlier for this upcoming week. We will not have school this Monday nor food distribution. We hope everyone will enjoy this three-day weekend and stay safe.
Across CPS next week, families will be supported in completing the 2020 Census. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or call the school if you need support in completing the Census. Also please read the Message from our CEO, Dr. Janice Jackson, below.
Have a great week and remember, "Everything is Possible, Nothing is Unimaginable".

Message from CPS CEO Dr. Janice Jackson: 2020 Census Week May 26-29
Much has changed in our communities over the past two months, but one thing that remains the same is the importance of the census. To help ensure maximum participation by Chicago families, we are declaring May 25-28 CPS Census Week, and we want to help make sure students and their families are counted.
As you can see from the video below, the census will have significant implications for our city’s education system for the next decade. So we must ask ourselves this question — how can we ensure everyone is counted in the 2020 census? The answer lies in education, engagement, and encouragement.
We’ve seen powerful examples of students leading the way in promoting this critical civic duty -- from students at Little Village Lawndale High School’s campuses leading peer-to-peer learning on census completion, to students at Foreman High School developing a PSA for all families. We’ve achieved a great deal in this area, and now is the time to ramp up our efforts.
Our goal as a district is to promote completion of the census and to get as many people as possible counted during the week of May 25.
Only when our CPS family is fully accounted for can our students receive the federal funding they deserve. Participation in Census Week activities is an ideal way to accomplish that goal. The week will feature many opportunities, including virtual workshops for families and a campaign to highlight the great work CPS students are doing to raise awareness of the census.
We thank you for your support and encourage you to reach out to Heather Van Benthuysen, Director of Social Science and Civic Engagement, at HVanBenthuysen@cps.edu with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Janice K. Jackson, EdD Chief Executive Officer Chicago Public Schools LaTanya D. McDade Chief Education Officer Chicago Public Schools

"Protecting Chicago" Plan for Reopening (update)
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, alongside the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), announced the “Protecting Chicago” framework that the City is using to guide Chicago’s reopening process amid COVID-19. The framework lays out how the City is thinking about reopening, and the details for each phase are being informed by economic and health data, and a combination of input from industry working groups, health experts and the public.
On Friday, May 22nd at 1pm, Mayor Lightfoot has announced that the City of Chicago will NOT reopen patios on May 29th with the rest of the State. She stressed the new timeline for Chicago patios will be early June.
City of Chicago - Community Survey on Reopening
As the City develops the details of its reopening plan, the City understands the importance of gauging public sentiment regarding stay-at-home and reopening. Through completing this short survey, you will help the City reopen in a way that reflects the lived experience of residents during the crisis. Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. Your voice is important.

Additional SNAP Benefits for CPS Families
Additional SNAP Benefits for CPS Families
Families with kids 3 to 22 years old (must still be in high school) that live in the state of Illinois can receive between $119-183 per child through June regardless of income in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Families are able to receive retro pay back to when in-person school ended. This is because there are no breakfasts or lunches being served at schools during COVID 19. Everyone with school age children is eligible regardless of income or immigration status.
To apply for Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) SNAP benefits go to ABE.ILLINOIS.GOV.
If you need application assistance contact CPS by emailing oshw@cps.edu or call at 773-553-KIDS (5437).
