Hello CV Family,

Whew! We are in the middle of homecoming week as I prepare my letter to you. It has been a great week thus far! The level of school spirit on display by our students and staff has been exceptional. I am sure your dinner table had conversations surrounding “Anything but a Backpack” day on Wednesday. It has been a crazy and fun week and we are looking forward to Friday night’s tailgate, football game, performances, and the homecoming announcements. I don’t want to forget about Saturday’s Homecoming Dance which should be another great adventure! A huge shout out to the CV Student Council for the planning, preparation, and execution of this week! We have the best students and they give back to our school community in such a positive way, we truly appreciate them and their leadership.

Fall to Winter Sports: Tryouts are underway for winter sports and as our fall sports end their seasons, I wanted to congratulate all of our players and coaches. Many of our teams are competing in their respective state tournaments right now. Best of luck to our individual competitors and our teams over the next couple of weeks!

CVHS Site Council Meeting: On December 1st, we will have a presentation by our School Resource Officer (SRO), Officer Dietz on drug awareness and trends. I would encourage you to learn about the current drug trends. If you are interested in joining us, the meeting will be held in the library at 5 pm.

The transition from middle school to high school can be challenging (lots of questions, planning out classes, making new friends, where do I fit in?). High school years are full of growth, promise, excitement, frustration, disappointment, and hope. It is the time when students begin to discover what the future holds for them. Our hope is that we can help make that transition a little less stressful. We would like to meet with YOU and YOUR STUDENT for a 30 minute individual Freshman Family Meeting either in person or via webex. During this time we will discuss your student’s four-year plan, goal setting, and your counselor can answer any other questions you may have.

EVIT will present to sophomores in World History and Geography classrooms on November 8th. They will go over the programs that are offered, application process, requirements for programs, and answer all EVIT related questions.

Coyote Time:

On November 10th our students will complete a 13 1/2 week academic grade reflection. Students will have an opportunity to create academic goals, reflect on their current academic habits, and have the opportunity to map out the rest of their high school career with a quick introduction to their academic planning with the Education and Career Action Plan [ECAP].

Embry Riddle is also on campus for any juniors or seniors interested in information from the college representative. The link to sign up is below.

On November 17th students will complete their academic planner in Infinite Campus [ECAP] with the guidance of the counselors and their Coyote Time teacher. This is a mandatory plan for each Gilbert Public School student.

Grand Canyon University is also on campus for all seniors. Any juniors interested in information may follow up with Amy Jacobson in the College and Career Center in the library.

Campo Verde Wellness Committee:
Campo Verde's Wellness Team hosts outdoor wellness days with lawn games and activities. We also host students in the student services classroom. This is a safe space for students to receive tutoring, mentorship, and unwind if needed. All items donated will be used for our campus and student social, emotional, physical, and academic wellness. The FAFSA is the foundation of financial aid (money to help pay for college). It determines eligibility for Federal Pell Grants, Federal Student Loans, need based scholarships and is required for some private scholarships. What do you need financial aid for? Tuition, room & board, books and living expenses while in college. All college bound students should apply!

ACE is an early college two-year scholarship preparation program designed to help first-generation, underrepresented, financially disadvantaged college-bound students succeed. Through the program, you can earn up to 24 college credits during your junior and senior years of high school. You’ll take classes on the CGCC campus to experience and get used to a college environment and ease your transition.

HOOP OF LEARNING Earn college credits while you’re still in high school! Hoop of Learning is an early high school to college bridge program designed to empower American Indian students to complete high school and transition successfully to higher education.

HOCO HEIST

On the first and second of November, families across South and Latin America gathered to honor and remember deceased loved ones. Entire families will construct traditional ofrendas, or altars— an important part of respecting and paying homage to the deceased. It is believed that the souls of the dead return to these ofrendas to visit the living families in homes, businesses and cemeteries. In order to guide their loved ones to the altars, the paths are marked with flower petals showing them the way. Below is an example of a traditional ofrenda in Mexico.

The ofrendas will typically include traditional food, fresh flowers, pan de muerto, candles, copal incense, cloths, and sugar folk toys. Apart from the ofrendas, decorations include tombstones, skulls and skeletons made of clay and other materials, sugar skulls, and papel picado. Orange and yellow marigolds are the main flowers used for Dia de los Muertos, as their vibrant colors and pungent scent lead the souls to the altars. As Dia de los Muertos is about celebrating the deceased, music is played at home and at the cemeteries to keep the mood light and celebratory. Furthermore, the name of each departed is written on a sugar skull to be eaten at the end of the celebration. Most importantly, a photograph of the departed soul is placed on the altar so that the deceased can find their way to the altar. Dia de los Muertos acts as a way to keep the memory of that person alive through remembering what they loved to do, eat, drink and look like. In honor of this special holiday, members of the Spanish Honor Society have set up an ofrenda in the cafeteria honoring Dia de los Muertos!

In honor of Hispanic Heritage month which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15, the Spanish Honor Society wanted to honor impactful members of the Hispanic community.

NASA Astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa was the first Hispanic Director of the Johnson Space Center and the second female director. Dr. Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to go to space on the nine-day STS-56 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1993. She earned NASA’s highest awards, the Distinguished Service Medal and the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award, in 2015.

November 2 was CVHS Japanese Club's first Cosplay Contest. Cosplay （コスプレ） is short for "Costume Play" and is a popular phenomenon in Japan. Our contestants were voted for based on creativity, best costume and best role play. Our winner for creativity was Izabella Schalk. Our winner for best costume was Kennedy Fischer. Our winner for best role play was Emmalyn Tilley. Japanese Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 2:30-3:30 in room 307. December meeting will be Christmas in Japan. Come join us!!

Drop-in after-school tutoring is up and running! NHS tutors are available every Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the library. Hope to see you there!

The Coyote Pride Marching Band has been busy showcasing their Guardian's show around the valley! They were awarded 2nd place with Music and Auxiliary captions at the Casteel High School competition on 10/23/21. At UofA Band Day in Tucson on 10/30/21, the Coyote Pride took a full sweep with 1st Place and ALL Caption awards! We are so proud!!! Special thanks to the parents, volunteers, and community members who continue to support our program! We couldn't do it without you!

Hello Coyotes!

If we have yet to meet, my name is Ms. Katie & I'm excited to be the new bookstore manager. Some of you may recognize me from my short stint at the front desk. My daughter and I just moved here from Minnesota a little over a year ago with our black lab, Frank. Yes, Minnesota is really that cold. Yes, I do have an accent.

I have already learned so much about all the bookstore has to offer. I am the one to come to if you have lost something or need Campo Crazy shirts. I have PE clothing, parking permits and tickets to Campo events! Plus, I'm a great conversationalist.

**PARKING PERMITS ARE SOLD OUT**

Students will need to visit the Bookstore to have their name added to the waitlist.

If you have purchased a parking permit and have not yet picked it up, please do so as soon as possible. The parking rules and regulations form LINKED HERE must be returned when picking up your permit.

Permits are only available for purchase in the Bookstore, they are no longer available online. Students must be a licensed driver to purchase a parking permit. Students with a learner’s permit will be placed on a waiting list and when they receive their license they can then purchase a parking permit, if available.

Students are required to display a parking permit when parking on campus. Security will be stickering and booting vehicles without permits. Parents will be required to come to campus if a student's car is booted. Make sure you have your parking permit clearly visible, preferably on your rear view mirror, every single day, no matter what car you are driving. If you have to drive a car that you have not registered with the bookstore, come tell me as soon as possible.

LOST AND FOUND

*Lost and found changes: I will be donating all items left in the lost and found during every break. I just cleaned it up and will be doing so again during winter break. I will remind you of these changes on announcements and on Instagram.

*All students should have their Student ID. Here's a tip: Take a clear picture of your ID with your cellphone as a back up in the event you lose your ID. Lost ID's can be replaced for $5.

*Take a minute now to write your name on the bottom of your Hydroflask, or other water bottle/jug for easier identification if it gets misplaced.

Gilbert Public Schools tuition preschool registration for the 2022-2023 school year will open on November 1, 2021 at 6:00 am. Through November 15, 2021 preference will be given to current GPS Preschool families and GPS employees. You may register for a preschool program through your Eleyo account at gilbertschools.ce.eleyo.com

During this early registration period, you will pay the registration fee and a $100 security deposit. This deposit will apply towards the first scheduled tuition payment. The remaining balance of the first scheduled tuition payment will be due on July 25, 2022.

This registration is for all preschool programs: Amanecer (tuition only), Building Blocks, Kindergarten Prep, and TOYBOX.

Library Information:

We’ve taken down all our spooky Halloween decorations and put up 4 new displays for the month of November. In this newsletter, we’ll feature our display about Native American authors. The display showcases 5 different authors giving students a QR code to explore information about each author. Those 5 authors, plus a few others that we didn’t have room to feature, all have books on the display for any student interested.

Chromebook Information:

If a student is having problems with his/her Chromebook, the place to go for help is the library. We will put it in for repair and give the student a loaner Chromebook until the original is fixed.

TIP: If the Chromebook doesn’t turn on right away, don’t panic! Give it a moment. It should turn on a few seconds after you open it.

Digital Citizenship:

Here is a tip from CommonSense.org that will help you as a parent guide your teen when it comes to posting online and creating a digital footprint. Use privacy settings. Sit down with teens to show the privacy settings you use on your apps and devices. Talk about why you keep certain information private or limited to a small group. Ask them what information they feel comfortable sharing and why.
