From the Principal
Dear RedHawk Parents & Guardians:
As the school year comes to a close, it’s essential to keep the momentum going when it comes to your child's reading. Summer is a perfect time for relaxation, but it's also an important period for maintaining and advancing your child's reading skills- even for kids going to high school. Here are some suggestions to make it an enjoyable part of your child's summer routine.
Why Summer Reading Matters:
Prevents Summer Slide: Research shows that students who don't read during the summer can lose up to two months of reading proficiency. This "summer slide" can set students back academically, making it harder for them to catch up when school resumes.
Improves Comprehension and Vocabulary: Regular reading helps enhance comprehension skills and expands vocabulary. The more children read, the better they become at understanding complex texts and expressing themselves.
Fosters a Love for Learning: Summer is an ideal time for children to explore books that interest them without the pressure of classroom assignments. This freedom can help cultivate a lifelong love of reading and learning.
Builds Empathy and Imagination: Reading fiction helps children develop empathy by allowing them to experience different perspectives and emotions. It also stimulates their imagination and creativity.
Tips for Encouraging Summer Reading:
Participate in the Thompson/Wredling reading challenge and "Get Hooked on Summer Reading." (see the graphic below for details)
Create a Reading Routine: Set aside a specific time each day for reading. This could be in the morning, before bed, or even during a daily "quiet time."
Visit the Library: Make regular trips to the local library. Many libraries offer summer reading programs with incentives and activities to keep kids engaged.
Choose Diverse Books: Encourage your child to read a variety of genres and authors. This not only keeps reading interesting but also broadens their understanding of the world.
Set Reading Goals: Help your child set achievable reading goals, such as reading a certain number of books or chapters each week. Celebrate their progress to keep them motivated.
Read Together: Make reading a family activity. Reading aloud to your child, even if they are older, can be a bonding experience and also models good reading habits.
Incorporate Technology: Utilize e-books and audiobooks, especially for reluctant readers. These can be a fun way to engage with stories and keep reading accessible.
Encouraging your child to read over the summer doesn't just keep their skills sharp—it also enriches their minds and nurtures their curiosity.
Happy Reading!
Tim
Notes from the Office
Reminder: Locker Clean Out Next Week
Next week, all students will be cleaning out their lockers and taking their belongings home. They are welcome to donate unused school supplies to the bins in the pods. Have your student bring an extra bag (or two) with them to bring home belongings from their Hall & PE lockers.
HALL LOCKERS:
Each team will set time aside to handle their hall lockers. Students should bring home ALL of their belongings.
PE LOCKERS
All students that have PE and Health, next Tuesday and Wednesday all students will clean out their PE lockers. Thursday, students will not have access to the locker room as summer cleaning will begin.
LOCKS:
Students should bring their locks home! They can use them moving forward either at WMS or High School athletic lockers or as needed. We recommend putting the locks in a location you will remember, writing down the combinations for future reference. Replacement locks are $7 each so keeping them is a good idea!
Congratulations to Bella Alongi for her leadership on the Girl Scout Silver Award!
Bella led her 'Be Inclusive' initiative by surveying students for their opinions on what words make them feel like they belong to a community. She analyzed survey results and by using a word cloud to find the most common words, she created the phrases "Treat people equally, and make them feel included" and "Everyone should respect other's differences, accept them for who they are, and be trustworthy".
Bella also held a contest with the students to create artwork for the mural, and Liam Gordon won with his depiction of the Wredling Red Hawk and the school. The final product was completed by student volunteers Brooke Rotter, Billie Thomas, and Aubrie Monoroy who helped Bella and Liam draw and paint the large mural. Special thanks to Mr. Loversky, Ms. Tyska, and the Wredling students for making this project a success!

School Supplies for 2024-2025 School Year
SchoolToolBox.com - This is the fastest and easiest way to get school supplies shipped directly to you! If you prefer to shop yourself, you can find our school supply lists on the Wredling website towards the bottom of this page.
We often get calls asking which box(es) to order as the School Tool Box website can be a little overwhelming.
Generally, the school supplies you will need are in the GRADE BOX at each level (6th Grade Box, 7th Grade Box, 8th Grade Box)
If your child is enrolled in Infinity or RISE, you would pick that box for the appropriate grade level INSTEAD of the Grade Box.
If your child is enrolled in Band/Choir/Orchestra you can also order the appropriate music box by grade level.
Explore/PLTW boxes are also available at each grade level depending upon which elective your child signed up for.
When in doubt… purchase ONLY the GRADE BOX

Medication Pickup Reminder
It’s hard to believe we are coming to the end of the 2023-2024 school year. This is a reminder that you will need to come to school to pick up your child's medication by the last day of school which is Thursday, May 30th. The only medications that can be given to a student to transport home are those that are allowed to be self carried (Epi Pens, Pancreatic Enzymes, or inhalers). Medications that are not picked up at the end of the school day May 30th, will be disposed of according to the D303 policy. This policy also does not allow medication to remain in the health office over the summer for the next school year. Epi-pens and inhalers can be sent home with students. Antihistamines can not be sent home with your child. Medication must be picked up by a parent or adult designee with the parent’s permission.
Medication Pick up: Friday May 24th 9am-2pm
Tuesday May 28th 9am-2pm
Wednesday May 29th 9am-2pm
Thursday May 30th, By Appointment Only
*If these times do not work, please call our office 331-228-3704 to try to schedule a pick up time.
Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 school year, if your child requires medication or any action plans, your child will need new physician orders and action plans for the next school year. Forms can be found under Health Services on the D303 website or linked directly here:
Make your appointments today with the physician, as these appointments fill up quickly!
School Physicals for the 2024-2025 School Year
Students entering 6th and 9th grade must submit evidence of a State of Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination form . 6th graders are required to have one dose of the Tdap vaccine and one dose of the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) on or after their 11th birthday. Also, students entering the 6th and 9th grade must submit evidence of a dental examination completed within 18 months prior to May 15th of that school year.
If your student is entering an Illinois school for the first time, evidence of a physical examination and a complete record of immunizations must be submitted within 30 days of their first day of school.
The health office is closed during the summer months. We will return for limited hours beginning in early August. Please contact me if there are new medical concerns for your child or if your child will need a health plan at school. Our email is Wms-Nurses@d303.org. Our fax number is 331-228-3707. If this number does not work, fax your paperwork to the main office at 331-228-3701.
Have a fun, healthy, and safe summer!
