CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
It's been another fantastic week at Canyon View Elementary School! Here is an update from Mrs. Cortez about what students have been up to in the Science Lab:
Over the last couple of weeks, we've been exploring the Human Body Systems inspired by the book, The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole. Before break, students labeled and identified parts of the digestive system and witnessed "digestion" through a hands on lab. We've continued our Human Body Systems with a discussion on the Respiratory System. Students created model lungs and examined sample tracheas. Our unit will end during American Heart month in February with the Circulatory system.
This week, PUSD's new Superintendent Dr. Ben Churchill visited Canyon View, accompanied by Board Members Michelle O'Connor-Ratcliff and Ginger Couvrette. Our visitors enjoyed touring the campus and visiting classrooms. I felt so proud to introduce our new superintendent to Canyon View Elementary School.
We have many wonderful things on the calendar this month. Please be sure to read through this Newsletter, so you don't miss out! Also, please take a moment to read the messages below from PUSD regarding new and continuing student enrollment and be sure to complete the enrollment survey linked below.
Let's Make it a GREAT NEW YEAR!

Continuing Student Family Survey
It is hard to believe it but our district has already begun planning for the 2025-2026 school year! In an effort to help us provide the most accurate information about the number of students who will be returning next year, please complete THIS SURVEY no later than Sunday, January 26, 2025. This will provide us with the number of returning students as well as those who will be leaving Canyon View, and will ensure that your child(ren) is enrolled correctly for the 2025-2026 school year. Please submit one form per student.
Families do not need to complete the form for current 5th-grade students because they will be automatically enrolled in 6th-grade at their school of residence. This is NOT considered continuing student registration. Continuing student registration will take place February 28th - March 31st and needs to be completed for ALL students enrolled in PUSD for the 2024-2025 school year. Visit PUSD Continuing Student Registration for more information.

Digital Citizenship Family Resources
In PUSD, we are committed to ensuring your child's online safety and privacy. As students engage in digital spaces—whether playing multiplayer games, using educational apps, or exploring new interests online—it’s crucial they understand the importance of keeping their personal information safe. With guidance on avoiding scams and protecting their digital footprints, students can enjoy learning and fun online while staying in control of their privacy. Families play an important role in helping children navigate these topics and establishing healthy, safe digital habits. Below are some Privacy and Security tips to share with your family.
Sincerely,

CATCHING UP WITH... Picture Books for Our Families
Specially Curated Books from Ms. Alice Burge, CVES Library & Media Tech
On Monday, January 20, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for all people. Although few kids question a day off from school, some may wonder why there's an entire holiday devoted to one man. It's because Dr. King's message of peace and justice touched so many.
The annual national holiday that commemorates him is a time to learn significant American history and reflect on valuable teachings that are still meaningful today. Below are some picture books to inspire discussion about the importance of speaking up and taking action to make a difference.
Speak Up written by Miranda Paul, illustrated by Ebony Glenn
When something really matters, one voice can make a difference. This spirited, vibrant picture book celebrates diversity and encourages kids to speak up, unite with others, and take action when they see something that needs to be fixed. Join a diverse group of kids on a busy school day as they discover so many different ways to speak up and make their voices heard! From expressing gratitude for a special treat to challenging a rule that isn’t fair, these young students show that simple, everyday actions can help people and make the world a better place.
Harlem Grown: How One Big Idea Transformed a Neighborhood written by Tony Hillery, illustrated by Jessie Hartland
Harlem Grown tells the inspiring true story of how one man made a big difference in a neighborhood. After seeing how restless they were and their lack of healthy food options, Tony Hillery invited students from an underfunded school to turn a vacant lot into a beautiful and functional farm. By getting their hands dirty, these kids turned an abandoned space into something beautiful and useful while learning about healthy, sustainable eating and collaboration. Five years later, the kids and their parents, with the support of the Harlem Grown staff, grow thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables a year. All of it is given to the kids and their families.
CATCHING UP WITH... Parking Lot Safety Reminders
IMPORTANT NOTICE: THE GREEN CONE ZONE IS FOR SPECIAL DAY CLASS FAMILIES ONLY
Additional Parking Lot Reminders
- Attention TK/K Families: You are not required to park and walk students to the gate for drop-off. Use our drive-through drop-off instead. We have supervision from the curb to the blacktop from 8:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please continue to park and pick-up from the gate at dismissal.
- Attention Grade 1-5 Families: Do not park in the lot for drop-off or pick-up. Instead, use the supervised drive-through pick-up curb west of the office. This allows sufficient parking for our staff, and TK/Kindergarten families.
- Curbside Drop-off/Pick-Up: Use our designated drop-off/pick-up area to the west of the office only. Do not ask your child to meet you anywhere else in the lot. While this might seem faster for you, it slows down our system for everyone and creates a safety hazard.
