Message from the Principal
October is a busy month for us at the Career Academy.
On the 2nd and 3rd we are delighted to have the opportunity to host approximately half of the freshmen in the Sioux City Community School District for a class shadow day. Ninth-grade students selected a pathway that they were interested in, and will spend an entire block experiencing that pathway. Students will learn more about the pathway and engage in an activity with students currently enrolled in the class.
We are also honored to be hosting the first ever, Future Ready Iowa Regional Summit on October 9th. We are expecting over 120 community and business leaders from around the region. Future Ready Iowa regional summits will bring together key stakeholders in education, business, economic development and community in ten locations across the state, to create local strategies that ensure all Iowans are future ready.
Every day great kids are working with great teachers to ensure great things are happening. I could not be more proud of the start we have had to our year.

College Planning and Financial Aid Night
The Career Academy will be hosting a college planning and financial aid night on Thursday, Oct. 25th. Staff from The Academy and Western Iowa Tech will be available from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM to help students and families with the following college and financial aid planning:
- Completing FAFSA
- Advisement for transferring WITCC courses to other colleges and universities.
- Registering for the December ACT
- Completing WITCC applications for admission
Additional info about the upcoming night will be e mailed to parents in the upcoming weeks. Parents will be asked to contact The Career Academy to sign up for a time slot to complete FAFSAs and registering for the December ACT test.

Karrie King - WITCC Intermediary Network Coordinator
As the WITCC Intermediary Network Coordinator (WIN), Karrie King is working with educators and students on work-based learning opportunities, including classroom speakers, work-site tours and job shadows. Through these career exploration activities, students are more prepared to make career decisions beyond high school.
As the school year is underway, many of these activities are already taking place. Construction students have been on tours with L & L Builders, welding students will be heading to SmithCo in October and several business speakers have been lined up for our classrooms. We also look forward to offering more job shadows opportunities to students. Applications can be obtained from the students’ teacher or by stopping in Karrie’s office located in the Academy Administration offices.

Education Pathway - Mrs. Wendy Bryce
Foundations of Education at the Career Academy
This class is an introduction to teaching course where students learn how the education system works. Students conduct interviews with teachers and other staff, observe teachers and their teaching practices, identify their own philosophy of education, design lessons, create their own school, and discuss current and past educational issues. Guest Speakers and College Representatives from around the Siouxland area also visit the classroom to provide information about educational opportunities.

Education Pathway - Mr. Brian Drent
The coaching certification pathway is new this year. Students will be taking 4 different classes throughout the school year. The classes are Coaching Ethics, Athletic Growth and Development, Anatomy and Physiology, and Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries. We currently have 58 students in 3 section of the class. The students will receive credits from Western Iowa Tech when the courses are complete. Students will also be apply to receive a coaching certification from the State of Iowa. So our students will be able to coach in Iowa after they graduate from high school.
We started the year with the Coaching Ethics course. We have used our time in this class to help students learn about the many aspects of coaching. We have spent the majority of our time learning about how to create a winning culture within their program. The students have learned the performance pathway: leaders create the culture, the culture produces the behaviors, the behaviors produce the results.
The second area that we have focused on is studying great coaches. Each student was able to conduct research on a great coach. They gave a presentation on what they thought made them a great coach. Regardless of the sport, coaches can learn from what other successful coaches are doing to create great programs.
Next up for our class is coaching interviews. Students are creating 10 questions that they want to ask a successful coach. They will first interview a local coach and then we will try to reach out to some coaches on a national level. This will be a great way for them to learn from many different perspectives on how to become a great coach.
