Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ August 19, 2024 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
Welcome back to another exciting school year. It was wonderful to have students back in the halls of Comm Arts. Here's to a year filled with learning, laughter, and memorable experiences. Let's make this year remarkable together.
For those who already have your student ID, please continue to wear them. If you don't have one, listen during lunch this week for an announcement. Chromebook checkout will be this Friday.
Week of Welcome (WOW)
To begin our week of welcome, students were invited to pick up an ice cream treat on their way to lunch. Week of Welcome is for freshmen and sophomores new to Comm Arts. The following items will take place during lunch. Tuesday is field games. Wednesday is Club Rush. This is the perfect time for students new to Comm Arts to learn about all the exciting clubs and organizations here. Thursday is Karaoke. Friday is shirt pick-up. Dr. Baker ordered each new student (9th and new 10th graders) a Comm Arts shirt. Pick up will be in the cafeteria during lunch.
Upperclassmen, we haven't forgotten about you. Your turn for karaoke is coming up on Monday, August 26th. Dr. Baker will be waiting for you in the LGI during lunch. Get ready to show off your singing skills and have a great time.
We have student assemblies next week. Comm Arts students will meet in the Comm Arts LGI to review campus expectations.

Campus Procedures
Student access to the building will begin at 8:00 a.m. If students arrive earlier, they are to report to the Taft cafeteria. Students can stay in the cafeteria or hang out at Comm Arts until the first period begins. Students will not be allowed to wait outside the building.
There are two bus drop-off/pickup points for Comm Arts students. One location is the driveway between Comm Arts and Taft (mainly Comm Arts students who live outside the Taft attendance zone) and the Taft bus loop, which is on the right side of the campus if looking at Taft from Culebra (this location is mainly for students who attend Comm Arts and live in the Taft attendance zone). Students, please remember that you will board the bus after school, where the bus will drop you off in the morning.
Students will use the front doors for arrival and dismissal. During passing periods, they will use the side door, which will shorten the distance traveled.
Juniors and seniors interested in off-campus lunch can pick up a Comm Arts form in our information station near the LGI. This form must be completed, including a parent's signature, before an off-campus sticker will be issued. This privilege must be renewed with a new sticker each grading period and revoked by the administration at any time if a student does not meet the campus's academic, attendance, and behavior expectations. You can stop by the Comm Arts office on Wednesday morning to pick up your off-campus sticker.
Electronics during Instruction Time
Students will have limited access to their devices this school year. Phones are often personal distraction devices. Unless otherwise stated, students cannot access their phones during instructional time. Student phones will need to be on silent and put away. Parents, if you need to communicate with your child, they can check their phones during the passing period and at lunch. If an emergency occurs and you need to reach your child during class time, please call the Comm Arts front office.
Dress Code Refresher
All students attending Communications Arts HS must adhere to the standardized attire requirement. If you are out of the dress code, you will be asked to change. Please plan accordingly. If you are unsure, please ask. Here is the link to the district’s dress code. The dress code items most addressed Monday morning were midriffs and short shorts. Shirts must be long enough to cover the stomach/back area, shorts/skirts must be at least mid-thigh, and pants cannot have holes above the knee.
Safety
As a safety reminder, NISD does not allow food deliveries for students or faculty/staff members. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff must wear their school IDs on campus for safety. Students who need an ID will have opportunities during the first week of school.
Here is the link for more information: Safety First, 2024-2025
Additionally, any visitors to campus will need to apply and pass a background check. This does need to be completed every year. It will not roll over. Here is the link to the background check: https://www.nisd.net/community/volunteer-mentor
If you notice anything unusual or a potential safety concern throughout the school year, please contact the NISD Safeline. The Safeline is anonymous and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance forms will be passed out to students during the first week of school. If you have questions regarding this insurance, please contact the number on the form.

Senior Portraits
Seniors, if you haven't already done so, please call Prestige at (877) 244-9873 or visit the local Prestige website to set up your senior portrait session. Only pictures taken with Prestige will be in the yearbook. Please keep these things in mind:
- Make sure they have you as a Communications Arts student, NOT Taft.
- Our yearbook pose is a cap and gown NOT tux and drape. Be sure that the cap and gown you are given is WHITE with a red and white tassel, and for those in NHS, our stole is blue NOT white. The yearbook pose is cap on, and you MUST BE DRESS CODE COMPLIANT. We will NOT be Photoshopping pictures.
- Yearbook ONLY sessions are free, but we encourage you to choose a package with a variety of outfits and poses to reflect your personality and interests.
- Please consider purchasing a portrait package. A percentage of each sale is returned to our yearbook account to cover the cost of printing the portraits in the yearbook.
- Be sure to have your pictures taken by November, so you can be included in the yearbook. The sooner the better, so you have time to do retakes if you are unhappy with the first session pictures.
- Prestige will be on campus 9/18/2024 and 11/1/2024. These dates are for yearbook pictures ONLY.
