Fun Run Greetings Shaw Montessori!
A big thank you to Mr. Pozo for leading the children in that incredible International Day of the Child program. We were treated to a delightful musical performance that spanned the entire age range. Thank you, families, for coming to show your support for our community and its diversity….and for bringing and sharing delicious treats from around the world.
On Thursday, October 17th two of our students who are part of the Indian Education program, Aolani and L Hopkins, spoke at the opening of the new Pueblo Grande Museum, now called S’edav Va’aki Museum, exhibit called “Following Their Roots”. This exhibit focuses on Indigenous agriculture and food sovereignty in Arizona. Along with Councilmember Jacob Butler and Professor Kotutwa-Johnson, experiences were shared on feeling connected and finding our identity. Thank you Aolani and L!
Wow, keep those pledges coming. The competition is palatable---even the middle school is engaging in the “purple “dusty” trophy” quest. On Wednesday, it is our preference that you leave the children until the end of the instructional day, it is early release. If they must leave after the Fun Run and wish to take your child then, please, do not send them back to class rather sign them out as you leave the gate. When the office must call children from the classrooms, it disrupts instruction.
Lastly, we do not have any celebrations on October 31st. We ask that you not send candy or children in costume that day. If either happen to arrive at Shaw, they will be stowed and sent back home to you. Please celebrate well and safely!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Hi Parents!
We will be implementing a program called Sunwise which is a program developed by AZDHS to educate students about sun safety, including the use of sunscreen. Per state policy, student’s may bring sunscreen in their backpacks to apply before they go outside. I will be going to each classroom to give a 10-minute presentation on sun safety that is age appropriate.
Information on this program can be found at: azdhs.gov/Sunwise

Hi all! Proofs have been sent for the students that were registered through the website. If you haven't received anything yet, please make sure to fill out the registration at https://tara.photo/register/.
Also please let me know if you'd like retakes or siblings photos done no later than Tuesday, November 5th by emailing photos@tarakerwin.com. Retake day is Thursday, November 7th. We had more than 80 sets of siblings on our list and I know a few were missed. Thanks for understanding.
Elementary Garden
Greetings!
Our second week with entomology was a success. We observed three different role-players in nature: pollinators, decomposers and predators. Often, insects fill more than one role. For example, ants fulfill all three roles! Students had a chance to observe pill bugs and hold worms. Worms are nature’s greatest decomposers. We are working on overcoming everyone’s vermiphobia. I keep reminding the students that it is impossible for a worm to hurt a person, but a person can hurt a worm many ways. We should all befriend our subterranean helpers.
School spirit week is off to a great start! Please see some of the middle schoolers that dressed as their favorite teacher. Way to represent!
The following volunteer dates are on the calendar:
· December 3rd & 5th (holiday concert afterparty)
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email (insects included). Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
