Newsflash 1 - Term 1
Marist School 10th February 2023
Kia ora, Ni hao, Dobar dan, Malo e leilei, Hola, Konnichiwa, Talofa, Namaste, Chão, Vannakkam, Kamusta, Hello!
Happy Chinese New Year!!! Wishing you luck, love, and health this Chinese New Year.
Welcome to 2023 we are so happy to be back at school. We have had a fruitful few days with our tamariki and staff settling into the new school year.
A huge Marist welcome to our new children, their families, our staff and a special welcome to Father Rob O’Brien. Father Rob has already met many parishioners and joined our staff this week for morning tea. We are looking forward to establishing strong relationships with you all!
This year we have adopted the theme of Tūhono-to connect locally & beyond. The theme encompasses our Strategic Goals around Whānaungatanga-Our Culture; Ako-Our Learners and Whenuatanga-Our Environment. Our school vision, mission and values are explicit and reflect The Marist Way, and everything is underpinned with the Catholic Social Teachings. This year we will explore the Catholic Social Teachings and enhance our understanding of these important principles.

A Prayer for Those Who Have Lost Their Homes
God our Cornerstone, help the many families who have lost their homes and their belongings because of this flood disaster. It is hard to imagine the emotional suffering they are enduring, along with many short-term and long-term needs. Bring them comfort, Lord, and meet their immediate need for shelter and clothing and personal items. Help them to be able to rebuild their lives. Amen.
We pray for those affected by the flooding with the recent extreme weather event. If you are struggling in any way please reach out. We have a generous, empathetic and compassionate school and parish community who are here to help.
Planning for possible extreme weather event
In light of the imminent cyclone supposedly hitting our city early next week we have prepared our school grounds and buildings. Our tamariki will be coming home with a Pick & Mix activity sheet (if there are any school closures), workbook etc. If we receive any communications from the Ministry of Education and/or the National Emergency Management Team we will be in touch.

YUMMY STICKERS
When you reach for that delicious apple for your morning brain snack please remember to peel off the ‘Yummy’ sticker and keep it safe!
We are collecting the Yummy Fruit Company stickers from their apples, and the labels off their plastic bags, for our share of $200,000 of free sports gear. The more labels/stickers we collect the more free sports gear we get for our school! Check out all the balls we got last year!
Put your stickers on a sticker collection sheet (below) and drop them into the school office in exchange for house points!
SPOTLIGHT
At Marist School we use Spotlight to upload and share your child/rens ongoing progress and achievement throughout the year. The last couple of years have been so disruptive but it is really important that you download the APP in order to see your child’s learning progress.
If you have not set up your Spotlight App yet or have not been using it, please contact Beth in the office on b.lockie@marist.school.nz for your unique ID. Once you have your ID you will be able to follow the instructions below to set up the app.
WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
YEAR 6 RETREAT
Yesterday, Year 6 went on a leadership Retreat to St Francis Retreat Centre. We learnt lots about how to be a Servant Leader like Jesus. We also learnt a lot about how to appreciate the good things about ourselves and use our gifts for others.
We did lots of activities like how to deal with different scenarios at school. We acted out scriptures and learnt how Jesus showed us how to be a leader. We are excited to be leaders of Marist School this year. I also enjoyed talking to God in a different way to how I have before.
Thank you Margaret and Kuilei for leading us and thank you Mrs Phillips, Mrs White and Ms Walker for coming with us.

CARITAS DONATIONS FOR TURKEY & SYRIA
Caritas Aotearoa NZ is accepting donations to help the people of south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria, seriously affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks of Monday 6 February which toppled hundreds of buildings and killed many thousands of people.
Keep the people of Turkey and Syria in your prayers as they face widespread devastation and loss of life. We're in contact with our partners on the ground as they assess the scale of the damage and critical needs at this time.
If you would like to donate, you can do so online through the Caritas Emergency Donation tab at this link: www.caritas.org.nz/donate-online (Please specify that your donation is for Turkey Earthquake)
Or donate via the Caritas bank account: 03-0518-0211216-00 (please include your first & last name and put Turkey as the code.)
Dear God,
Through dark and difficult moments, we know that You are always with us. Today we come to You in prayer to ask You to bring comfort, healing and hope to the communities that have been devastated by this disaster.
Let the people of these nations rest in the comfort of knowing that You are with them and that you will provide for their needs as You always have.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
MARIST MEALS
This year we are continuing with Marist Meals - a pastoral care initiative. These meals are provided to families in the school & parish community when a little extra support is needed (e.g. a new baby, sickness, bereavement). With the impact of covid and many of our school and parish families isolating or unwell, it would be great if we could fill up the freezer so we can help lighten the load for families during these challenging times.
If you would like to contribute, we welcome any homemade, brought meals or baking for our freezer. Meals can be dropped off to the school office.
Containers available at the school office.
ST MARYS FOODBANK NEED YOUR HELP
St Mary's Parish Foodbank is feeding nearly 2000 a month. PLEASE remember them when you are shopping - they are in desperate need of donations! Anything you can contribute will be very much appreciated.
There is a box on the front porch of the presbytery.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support!
