Summer 2019
Coeur d'Alene Public Schools — June 14, 2019
Young readers invited to CDA Reads for free books, games, lunch
On Monday, June 17, young readers are welcome to pick out two free books, take part in games and enjoy lunch on us at CDAReads, a celebration of summer reading hosted by Coeur d’Alene Public Schools. The free event will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Fernan STEM Academy, 520 N. 21st Street. A second CDAReads event will be held Monday, July 15, at the same time and location.
CDAReads is designed for students in kindergarten through third grade. The goal is to promote a love of reading and support the elements of good reading instruction through the summer. Many children experience a summer slide in literacy skills, but those who read regularly – by themselves or with adults or older siblings – are more likely to start school in the fall reading at grade level.
The school district is hosting additional CDAReads events on Mondays by invitation, based on individual student needs. In addition, CDAReads will be held Wednesdays, starting next week, for students attending the district’s School PLUS program at Ramsey Magnet School of Science, and for students participating in the district’s CDA4Kids program at Fernan.
The district’s Nutrition Services Department will serve a free lunch at all of the summer reading events, including the two open dates, June 17 and July 15.
CDAReads is part of the district’s K-3 literacy initiative. For more information go to www.cdaschools.org/cdareads or call (208) 664-8241.
We are looking for volunteers to review school day start times for middle and high school
Coeur d'Alene Public Schools is considering changing when the school day begins for all of our students in order to provide a later start time for middle school and high school students. Such a change will have implications for all schools and programs throughout the district, including at the elementary school level.
We are assembling an advisory committee to study the impact of a later start time on District operations and the families we serve.
We are looking for parents/guardians of students at all grade levels as well as community members to serve on this voluntary advisory committee, which will make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees in 2020. The committee will begin meeting in September and continue its work through next school year and beyond, if necessary.
The committee will research all aspects and impacts of changing school start times within the district and the community. Compelling evidence exists that adolescents and teens could benefit from later start times. However, changing secondary start times creates issues that will impact many in our community. The implications that must be considered include, but are not limited to:
- After-school care for K-5 students if the elementary school day is adjusted to begin and end earlier
- The impact on extracurricular activities
- Student transportation
- Potential loss of instructional time
- Parent work schedules
More than one-fourth of the advisory committee must be comprised of persons other than public educators, District staff members and school board members. Careful considerations for inclusion in committee membership will be made to ensure diverse perspectives are represented.
Go here to apply to serve on the advisory committee. Applications are due August 31 and will be presented to the Board of Trustees on September 9.
Student Test Score Results Delivered
Even though our students may be adjusting to their summer schedules, our district’s teachers and administration are diving into student results and preparing for the coming school year.
With your students, you should have received paper copies of assessment results for any of the following tests taken this spring:
The ISAT presented by Smarter Balanced or “SBAC” (grades 03-08 and 10) for English language arts and mathematics
ISAT-Alternative Assessment presented by NCSC (students who receive special education and are assessed on alternative grade-level standards)
ISAT Science (grades 05 and 07)
EOC-Science (students enrolled in high school biology and/or chemistry)
WIDA Access 2.0 for students whose first language is not English
Idaho Reading Indicator or "IRI" (grades KG-03) to monitor student progress towards meeting local and state literacy goals
i-Ready Progress Monitoring (grades KG-08) to monitor student progress in mathematics
NWEA MAP Growth (high school-equivalent mathematics) helps us watch student progress toward meeting mathematics growth goals in grades 09-12.
As we continue to receive results, we expect that scores will be posted to Skyward Family/Student Access > Test Scores in the coming days. If you did not receive your students’ scores or the interpretation guides, you can contact your student’s office through next week or send us a message to testing@cdaschools.org.

How to manage your Peachjar flyer email settings
We're saving time and money since we switched to the Peachjar e-flyer platform a few months back. To date we have saved 367,298 pages of paper using Peachjar!
