LMS Weekly Newsletter
April 7, 2024
Dear LMS Families,
Last week we closed out the 3rd quarter, which is super exciting and also SO STRANGE because time seems to be flying by.
Monday is a regular school day, and will be the first day of 4th quarter; the only schedule changes students may encounter are a transition into health or back out of health to PE. Occasionally we see some schedule changes for individual reasons, but other than that our students should expect to continue with their existing schedules.
Last week we were taken by surprise when the circuit communication was disrupted during some electrical work, and we were forced to evacuate the building. Our students and staff did an incredible job problem-solving and everyone safely evacuated and lined up at our meeting place. We did learn a few things that will help us move forward in these unplanned evacuations:
- Students will line up with the teacher for their PREVIOUS CLASS if we are forced to evacuate during lunch/recess or a transition period.
- We will take a megaphone along with us to make communication easier when we are trying to organize outside.
- We will plan a safety drill in the next few weeks that will allow us to practice an "atypical" evacuation.
While we will never be completely ready for an emergency, learning from these moments and practicing specific scenarios when we identify gaps will help us to be better prepared. I'm so proud of the work our safety team has done that allowed our students and staff evacuate so efficiently last week.
Last week was Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and I'd like to share some appreciation for our AP's, Emily Barron and Jesus Ramos, and all the work they do to support our students and staff at LMS. While this is our first year working together as a team, it feels like we have been together forever - their hard work, collaboration, and care for our community is incredible and we are so fortunate to have them!
This coming week we will be welcoming 5th graders from our feeder schools for informational tours on Wednesday and Thursday. Our student leaders are working hard to make sure that our incoming 6th graders see our school and get all their questions answered, and our band, choir, and dance are preparing to perform as part of their introduction to Lane Middle School. We are so proud of the work we do and can't wait to share it!
Tomorrow, we may have a chance to glimpse the eclipse from our part of Portland, but with clouds expected and only a partial eclipse visible here it isn't likely. I've ordered eclipse glasses in bulk, just in case, and we will make sure students are safe if we have visibility. The next eclipse will occur 20 years from now, so if we miss this one we have a long while to wait.
Thanks so much for all that you do to support your students and our school; I hope you have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Rosemarie El Youssef
