Polar Plunge
2025 Polar Plunge is almost HERE! McGuire Elementary has a team that is taking the plunge together to help support our local athletes participate in the Special Olympics. We would love your support for our team as we want to raise funding for Special Olympics! The event is Feb. 8 here in Mt. Pleasant. You can donate to our school by going to the website, selecting "donate" and searching for our team called the "McGuire Mustangs." Let's see how much we can do TOGETHER!!!
Lions Gear-Show your Spirit!
Our school spirit was roaring as students and staff showed off their Lions Pride during our special Lions Gear Day! From jerseys to hats, everyone was decked out to celebrate in style.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made the day a fun and spirited celebration of our Lions and our amazing community! 💛💙
Underground Spirit Day for Staff-Pattern Day!
Our staff wore patterns, stripes, polka dots, etc. and didn't tell the students! We were trying to see if the students would notice that we were all dressed in patterns. Some of them started to catch on and began to question our outfits. At the end of the day, we told them we had a Secret Spirit Day and gave them a few minutes to try to remember what staff was wearing and make their guess. Then we announced the day to our Mustangs! Look for a few more Underground Spirit Days to come soon!
Snowflake Staffirmations
We have been spreading joy and positivity within our staff by affirming the good things we see in each other. For the month of January, we are working to give staff members a snowflake affirmation to put on their door. Our doors are already looking full and we have more time left. There are such great things happening at McGuire and it is so much fun to celebrate all the good we see in each other!

Coins for a Cause Update
Thank you to everyone who participated in Coins for a Cause. Our school raised $515.54 which was matched by United Way for a total of $1,031.08 for the Isabella County Restoration House! The winning classroom was Miss Pridgeon's class. They will receive a pizza party courtesy of United Way!
NWEA Motivation
With NWEA testing occurring next week, we thought students could use some affirmations! Student council representatives created posters that will be displayed around the school next week as a way to motivate students to do their best on the test. As you are walking your class to lunch/specials/recess, encourage your students to check them out!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
On Monday, January 20th, it will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Student Council representatives practiced reading a poem about MLK Jr. that they will share with each class. The poem ends with a question, which we hope will spark discussion within the classroom during morning meeting or quick classroom down time. Student Council also shared activities with the classrooms to go along with the poem.

Youth Services Monthly Update
MPPS uses the A.L.I.C.E lockdown model. We have been discussing each letter acronym individually and conclude this segment with a brief overview of all of the letters and how we implement this.
In review, the I in A.L.I.C.E stands for Inform.
The purpose of Inform is to continue to communicate information in real-time, if it is safe to do so. Information should always be clear, direct and in plain language, not using codes. Here are four tips to help you ensure your administrators, teachers, staff, and students are prepared to utilize communication strategies effectively.
Provide Real-Time Information
Help keep those closest to danger informed so they know whether to switch strategies. For example, maybe they have the opportunity to switch from lockdown to evacuate.Take Note of Surroundings
Provide as much information as possible to others including things like the intruder’s location, number of intruders, physical description of intruders, the kinds of weapons, and the number of injured people.Use Plain Language
Do not use code words. During an emergency some people may not remember code words and visitors will not know what they mean.Determine How to Inform
It’s important to determine how your organization will Inform during an emergency. Options can include your PA system, walkie talkie, classroom phone, or cellphones.
Remember, knowledge is power. Staying aware and informed is an important defense against an armed intruder.

Cold Weather is HERE
As we gear up for colder temperatures please make sure your student brings the proper winter gear with them to school. We go outside each day unless it is raining or below 0 for a classroom recess and a lunch recess. It helps if your student's items are labeled as well, so if things end up in the lost & found they can be returned!
Students need to have warm clothing, including winter coat, hat, gloves/mittens, boots, snow pants. These items can be expensive, if you need help please write in a note in your child's school agenda for their teacher. We can see how we can help.

School Safety Drills
During the course of the school year, our buildings are obligated to practice at least 5 Fire Drills, 2 Tornado Drills and 3 Lockdown drills. At times, we do have our YSU Liason or other officers from the Police Department assist in our drills. We cover with our students the locations of where to go for each drill, what to do during specific drills, and how to properly evacuate when it is needed. You can also find this information in your child's Handbook at the front of the student agenda.
During the first weeks of school, classes read the story, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared book in their class with their teachers. This book focused on the main components of the safety protocols that we work on with children.
I also encourage you to check out our district website where we have information that pertains to our district school safety. Click here to get to the website.
Mcguire Mustangs are Safe, Respectful and Responsible!
At McGuire Elementary, our school expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible and we are committed to teaching and reinforcing positive behavior expectations in all areas of the school from the classroom to the playground. Each area of our school day, has a focused set of positive expectations that we teach, model, and practice - on what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible.
Our Mustang matrix is at the front of your student's agenda in the pages included for the student handbook, we encourage you to review these expectations at home with your child too.
Daily our students earn Dojo Points for meeting positive expectations, we recognize students with our Mustang Tickets, Weekly Drawings, Positive Office Referrals, Positive Postcards mailed home, and Students of the Month.
We know our students are still growing and developing mentally and socially, so we recognize it is always a work in progress when teaching and reteaching expectations. We utilize restorative practices - including repairing the harm, circle ups, and more.
We appreciate your partnership in supporting our McGuire Mustangs to help make McGuire a great place to be!
