INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL
2022-2023 Week 8 (10/3) Updates
Principal's Update
I hope everyone enjoyed the fall break and took some downtime.
Marking Period 1 grades were due the week before break. This is an excellent time to check in with teachers about progress, missing assignments, and methods for improving grades to remain A-G Eligible. This week is also an excellent time to check in with teachers about times to get additional support through the Office Hours this Thursday morning during collaboration, or our Goodwill assets program tutoring.
Tomorrow afternoon is our October School Site Council Meeting.

Athletics Updates
#BeTheChange!
Sportsmanship is simple, treat others how you would want to be treated. Respect the game and everyone participating including student-athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators. Education-based athletics is more than winning, it’s about academic development, equity, and character. Be Responsible, Be Respectful, #BeTheChange!
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has produced a Sportsmanship PSA (both audio and video) for everyone to share with their school communities. If possible, please use this valuable resource before every contest and wherever you might find it useful to spread the word and help #BeTheChange! View the video HERE.

Activities Updates
Homecoming Events, 10/17 - 10/22:
Class Officers are currently organizing and preparing for our annual Homecoming Traditions, including: Airband Competitions, Quad Day, and the Outdoor Dance. ASB is currently prepping clubs and organizations for the Homecoming Royalty Nomination Process. Significant dates include:
Mon - Wed: (Class Specific Events)
Thurs: IHS ClubTailgate Market & Homecoming Football Game vs. Branham High School
Fri: Schoolwide Homecoming Rally
Sat: Outdoor Homecoming Dance and Monarchy Reveal: 7pm-10:30pm @ IHS Memorial Grove
Homecoming Dance: Through the Looking Glass, is a thematic outdoor event, including photobooths, foodtrucks, games, music and dancing! The event takes place on campus and in Memorial Grove on Saturday, October 22nd. Tickets will be available for $10, for a limited time only. After that, the price will go up and continue to go up until all tickets are sold. Be ready to purchase your Homecoming Tickets, starting this Friday! Be sure to plan in advance - last year we SOLD OUT, five days before the dance!
Homecoming is a semi-formal event. Unlike prom, no one needs to wear a full suit/ tuxedo, but students shouldn't dress up in something they could wear to school. Typical homecoming attire for guys is a button up shirt with dress pants or khakis, maybe a tie or bow-tie, dress shoes, and perhaps a sweater, blazer, or vest. Since this is an outdoor event, taking place on grass, long gowns are not recommended. Similarly, stilettos and heels over 2” are strongly discouraged. It is safer and more comfortable to wear a blocked heel or wedges.
Yearbook SALES ARE ON!
Yearbooks are priced according to a sliding scale, so purchasing earlier guarantees a better price. Right now, the yearbook is at its lowest cost, $65! Act now, price will increase, soon!
Students and parents/guardians can order a yearbook at the school bank (A-06), or visit www.yearbookordercenter.com (enter code 6072) to purchase online. In addition, the YOC offers packages for purchasing advertisement pages to honor graduating seniors and promote local businesses.
Student Picture Orders Have Arrived!
For students, parents/guardians who ordered school pictures, your photos have arrived. Please send your student to the A06 Bank to pick them up!
Senior Student Corner
Make Your Senior Portrait Reservation
Senior Portraits will be taken at Now and Forever Studios in Los Gatos. Act soon to secure a reservation and plan for travel to the event. Contact the studio via phone to make your sitting reservation, now: (408) 354-8660. Online Reservations may be made starting in November @ www.nowandforeverstudio.com
These are not the ID card/ transcript photos. These are the optional, formal pictures that are often sent to relatives and passed out to friends and staff during the graduating year. Senior portraits include a formal and a graduation photo - all attire will be provided by the photographer. There is no pressure to purchase photos, but there is a "sitting fee." If students sit for a photo, then the studio will provide IHS a copy to publish in the yearbook.
Graduation Gear
Coming in November, all seniors will meet in assembly with Herff Jones, our graduation vendor. There they will learn about purchasing graduation cap & gown kits, formal invitations, 2023 apparel, and commemorative jewelry and accessories. Students will be provided with ordering forms and the option to purchase these items, onsite, for a much cheaper rate than online. More details to follow soon.
MTSS
A multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective.
Student voice is an important part of the narrative data we collect to inform decisions made around school improvement and high quality instruction. One way to collect student voice is through school-wide lessons carried out in 4th period classes. Students were able to share innovative ideas for community challenges they found important. It is impressive how much our students think about others:
“I think that people not getting enough resources for mental health in certain parts of the world are causing people to go crazy and do unimaginable things. Providing more resources for mental health and counseling could help in a way. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to or someone to listen.” ~Magaly L. Sophomore

Sixer Shoutouts
Student Shoutout
Ashraf Mohammed is an amazing Sixer! In the few minutes I was walking with him on campus, he greeted so many students, making them feel welcome and a part of the community. This action, which is so natural to Ash, truly makes our students and staff feel seen and included. Ash also went as a solo representative from IHS to a leadership training and his ability to connect with others was amazing. He is a fantastic SIXER and I'm so honored to know him. ~Dr. LaMontagne, MTSS
Staff Shoutout
Mr. Hoang Nguyen, Your use of the school-wide lessons to learn more about your students and use it as a screening tool for proactive care is to be commended. Much appreciation for your dedication to teaching and caring for our students and our community as a whole. ~MTSS Tier I Team
