Transition Tip #25
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, as education providers it is important that we know that the mental health of our students affects their academics and well-being. As educators we cannot be oblivious to the mental health of our students. Some people struggle with mental health and are afraid to seek assistance from their loved ones and/or professional mental health providers. It is important that we are open and attentive to those around us who may be suffering in silence not only as educators but as human beings.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) addresses mental health in this link: MDE Addressing Mental Health. This link explains Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies and indicators along with resources addressing mental health and agencies to assist with mental health. If you know that a student is dealing with mental health concerns, please report it to the proper school officials and if you know anyone outside of your students who may be dealing with a mental health crisis have them call/text 988 or click this link: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline .
Check out Study.com's article on: Mental health strategies for teens . This article includes information, strategies, and supports to assist young people with mental health.
