Jackson-Reed High School Course Selection
As promotion gets closer, now is the time for our 8th grade students to start planning for their transition to high school. How exciting! Staff from Jackson Reed High School visited our students this week and held a virtual meeting with families to share information about the course selection process. Students should have brought home a form to select their courses.
All students are asked to discuss the attached course selection form with their families and bring the completed, signed form to their advisory teacher by March 28th. Please reach out to the Jackson Reed team or our wonderful 8th grade counselor, Ms. Travers, with any questions about this process.
Note: even if your student is considering other high school options, we ask all students to go through this process to learn about the options available to them in high school. Submitting this form helps the Jackson Reed team plan for next year, but does not lock your student in to attending Jackson Reed.
World Languages Trips
Traveling abroad for school is an exciting opportunity, and the Deal team is honored to have so many 8th graders taking this adventure. While we consider these trips an important part of our students’ education and the absences will be excused, it is important that students keep up with the learning they will miss while they are out of the country.
To support students and families, every student traveling on an international trip will be given a personalized make-up work list based on their individual schedule. These lists will be distributed by homeroom teachers on Monday and families are encouraged to ask their students about their list. Students will have one week after the return of their trip to complete their assignments without penalty.
All content-related questions should be directed to the teacher. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments will be visible in Canvas. If your student loses their list, team teachers will have access to a digital version they can share with families.
Promotion Celebrations - Save the Date
As we look forward to our 8th graders' next big step, please save the following dates for promotion-related celebrations. Additional details, including logistics and costs, will be shared in the coming weeks.

Ms. Thompson: Science
This week, we will wrap up our Kinetic and Potential Energy Unit and begin exploring its connection to Forces, Motion, and Newton’s Laws.
📌 Monday, March 17, 2025: What is Motion, and how does it relate to Balanced and Unbalanced Forces? (Short game and Simulation Activity)
📌 Tuesday, March 18, 2025: What is Inertia and Newton’s 1st Law? (Short hand-on activity on this day)
📌 Wednesday, March 19 - Thursday, March 20, 2025: How do Mass and Acceleration relate to Force? (Short hands-on activity and Calculations on these days)
📌 Friday, March 21, 2025: Students will review the concepts learned earlier in the week in a gamified way. (Brief study guide and game on this day.)
These assignments will help students build a deeper understanding of energy, motion, and forces while also integrating hands-on activities and real-world applications.
🚨 Reminder: I will review late submissions at my earliest convenience, Meanwhile, students must complete work on time to ensure it is graded promptly. Missing assignments will result in a WS score in Aspen. Per DCPS grading policy, late assignments can result in a deduction of 1 letter grade.
Thank you for your continued support, and have a great week!
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students wrapped up unit 4 Westward expansion by completing their end of unit summative. For this summative students worked in groups to create a newspaper from the perspective of one of the groups we studied throughout the unit. Students had to create a newspaper arguing whether expansion west was a positve or negative for that particular group and the interactions they faced with other groups. Next week we start our second to last unit, Reform & Sectionalism. The schedule for next week is below.
- Monday: Unit Launch
- Tuesday: Compromise of 1850
- Wednesday: Frederick Douglass
- Thursday: William Lloyd Garrison
- Friday: John Brown & Harpers Ferry
Ms. Cunha: English
Last week, ELA students began reading To Kill a Mockingbird. We read and annotated Chapter 1 together to gain a deeper understanding of the characters and setting.
Next week, we will read and annotate Chapters 4-8. We will have an annotation check for chapters 1-3 on Monday and a quiz on Wednesday!
Homework: students needed to annotate chapters 2&3 over the weekend.
Ms. Anderson: Math
Last week Math 8 students learned about the Pythagorean Theorem and how it can help determine if triangles are right triangles and how to use it to find missing side lengths. Last week algebra 1 students continued to work on factoring.
This coming week students will be able to find their math work on Canvas until I return from chaperoning the Costa Rica field trip. Math 8 students will work on learning about the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres, while Algebra 1 students will learn about the quadratic formula. Students will be able to find the directions for their work on Canvas and will need their notebook. On Monday both groups of students will work on a Pi Day activity that can be found on Desmos. Students are welcome to bring circular treats to eat.
