What is Speech Therapy?
Speech-language therapy addresses challenges with language and communication. It can help people with autism improve their verbal, nonverbal, and social communication. The overall goal is to help the person communicate in more useful and functional ways.
Communication and speech-related challenges vary from person to person. Some individuals on the autism spectrum are not able to speak. Others love to talk, but have difficulty holding a conversation or understanding body language and facial expressions when talking with others.
A speech therapy program begins with an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to assess the person’s communication strengths and challenges. From this evaluation, the SLP creates individual goals for therapy.
Common goals may include improving spoken language, learning nonverbal skills such as signs or gestures, or learning to communicate using an alternative method (such as pictures or technology).

Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC)
Some people with autism find that using pictures or technology to communicate is more effective than speaking. This is known as Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC). Examples of AAC methods include:
- Sign language
- Picture exchange communication system (PECS)
- iPads
- Speech output devices (such as Dynavox)
The speech-language pathologist can help to identify which AAC method (if any) is right for someone with autism and teach him/her how to use the method to communicate.

Using Guided Access
Quick Tip:
Have difficulty with a student hitting the home button on their iPad to escape the app you want him or her to work in? Use Guided Access. Guided Access limits your device to a single app and lets you control which features are available. This is especially helpful for those students who want to exit an app rather than complete the requested task. Here are the instructions:
How to set up Guided Access:
1. Go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn scroll down to Guided Access. Turn Guided Access on.
2. Tap on Passcode Settings, then tap set Guided Access passcode.
3. Enter a passcode, then re-enter it. Make sure and write down the passcode so you have it to refer to if you or other staff members forget it.
Start a Guided Access session:
1. Open the app that you want the student to use. Triple-click the home button.
2. If you want parts of your screen to stop responding to touch, use one finger to circle those areas. You can move or resize the circle, or tap the X to remove it. If you need training in
these or other higher level function of Guided Access contact AT for training.
3. Tap Guided Access, then tap Start.
To end a Guided Access session:
Triple-click the home button, enter the Guided Access passcode, then tap End.
