Principal's Pen
We had a blast today at the Mizzou basketball game! Ridgeway has such a tight knit community and events like this where we get to come together as a building are always fun. I remain so thankful to be the principal of such a supportive and engaged community of educators, learners and families. I hope you all have a fantastic holiday and enjoy the extra time with your children next week.
Reminders:
No Adventure Club next week (11/25-11/26). If your child usually attends Adventure Club, please contact the office and your child’s teacher to let us know how they will go home next week.
Lost and Found items not picked up by 11/26 at 3pm will be donated to Goodwill - lost and found items are still folded/laid on a table in the library hall!
No RAP next week
Please review the real feel temperature projections prior to leaving the house each morning and ensure your child is dressed appropriately. If a student does not have a jacket or coat when it is required, they will be asked to borrow one from lost and found. If they refuse to borrow from lost and found, they will be asked to read/write in a buddy room during recess time. Our coat and jacket policy is listed in the graphic below
Unit Notes
Unit A
**Reading:** We are wrapping up our technology unit. This week, we focused on story elements and comparing and contrasting technology from the past, present, and future.
**Writing:** Our informational writing pieces were published this week. Please ask your student to share the piece of technology they wrote about and discuss what makes it more effective than technology from the past.
**Phonics (Mincke/Triplett)** We learned the new letters 'v' and 'w,' along with the high-frequency word 'on.' **(Blades/Horn):** We continue working on l-blends, k-blends, and r-blends. Our new high-frequency words are: ‘was’, ‘there,’ ‘then,’ ‘out,’ ‘now,’ ‘do,’ ‘which,’ and ‘went.’
**Math (Mincke/Triplett):** We have been focusing on the sequence of numbers, counting strategies, and representing numbers in multiple ways. **(Blades/Horn)** We are continuing to focus on measurement, data, and addition and subtraction strategies.
Unit B
- We have wrapped up our bat study. We explored informational writing, fictional writing, and explored reading strategies such as utilizing text features and character development. We are moving to opinion writing next.
- We enjoyed the Mizzou women's basketball game. MIZ!
Unit C
Graves/Sandstedt - In math class, students have been practicing fraction addition and subtraction with both like and unlike denominators.
Gray/Whtie - In our math class, we are currently studying decimals, with a particular focus on the tenths and hundredths places.
In literacy, we are working on comparing and contrasting the play and narrative versions of well-known fantasy stories.
Specialist News
Media Center Happenings Fall 2024
In Media Class, students learn foundational technology skills and how to use technology safely. Some of the skills we have worked on this trimester include: proper iPad care, online safety, typing, coding, and how to navigate various district resources and databases like Pebble Go and World Book Kids. Students have also done some creating using programs like Draw and Tell, Keynote, Pages, and Stop Motion Animation.
Another area of the Media Program is incorporating technology and design thinking in the classroom. Unit A students have been having weekly STEM time where students have been doing a variety of challenges that work on creative thinking and teamwork. They have also used the app Draw and Tell in their classroom to take photos and label the parts of a pumpkin.
Unit B has also been working on critical thinking and teamwork- most recently with a breakout box challenge. This was in conjunction with their bat/animal adaptation unit. Students were on a team and asked to solve a variety of puzzles to “break into” a locked box. This is similar to an escape room.
Unit C students tried out our new 3D printer by designing and printing keychains with their name on them. We then incorporated the 3D printing skills into their science unit about animal structure and function by designing and printing prosthetic animal parts for an “injured” animal.
In addition to Media Specials class, students also visit the Media Center each week to hear books read aloud and checkout library books.

PTSA News
Hello from the PTSA Grants Committee!
The Grants Committee works to identify grant options for faculty and staff that can be used for projects, clubs, facility additions, or classroom resources. These grants can be enormously beneficial to our students and teachers, and you can help! If you work for a company or organization that offers grants- or you are aware of other grant opportunities- please let us know. We are always looking for new options to explore. Also, we are on the lookout for some used laptops for our Yearbook Club, so if you have contacts with a company or organization that donates old laptops, we would love that information!
Feel free to email any grant information to Kali.Wright-Smith@wcmo.edu.
Thanks in advance!
PTSA Meeting/Childcare Reminder
