Peterson's News
11/4-11/8
Good evening,
Happy Diwali to all of our families who are celebrating!
The Glow Lunch was amazing!! Thank you to our volunteers who came in early and made it spectacular for our students.
Report Cards are now viewable in ParentVUE. You will see a report card and a Math Profile of Progress, which shows where your child is in his/her math skills for Quarter 1. A reminder with the Profile of Progress - a "B" means that the student is beginning to show proficiency in that standard. A "M" means that the student is currently meeting that standard and an "E" means that the student exceeding that particular standard. We would like all students to be at least be meeting the standards by the end of the year. We are so proud of our students for the growth they have already shown this school year!
We look forward to seeing you at Parent-Teacher Conferences on either Thursday, November 21st, or Monday, November 25th. Please sign up in ParentVUE starting Wednesday, November 13th, at 6:00 a.m.
Thank you for all that you do to support your child!
Best,
Alli Landstrom
Reminders
Our picture retakes are on Thursday, November 7th. The new retake forms went home last week. Please see below for more specifics!
New Forgotten Items/Lunch Drop-Off Procedures beginning Wednesday, November 6th.
Beginning Wednesday, November 6th, we will have a new procedure for dropping off forgotten items and lunches. Many elementary buildings are changing their practices in order to strengthen our security procedures, such as decreasing the number of distractions from visitors and opening outside doors during the school day. Keeping the outside doors closed ensures the security of our building. Making these changes will help increase our attention and focus on students in the school.
If a student has forgotten something or a lunch needs to be dropped off, parents can bring the items and place them on the cart outside of the building between 9:15 and 1:00.
Forgotten Items/Lunch Drop-Off Procedures
- Please do not ring the office bell. We can view items and/or lunches from the office camera.
- When you drop off your child’s item and/or lunch, mark your student’s lunch with First and Last Name and Class. Labels and markers are provided on the cart.
- Leave the labeled lunch on the cart.
- The cart and lunches will be brought into the building at regular intervals to ensure students get their items.
- No items will be accepted after 1:00 pm.
Please note that regardless of the temperature or weather, the item/lunch drop-off will remain outdoors. We appreciate Peterson families for supporting and following this new procedure and plan!
Parent University
This year, we will be offering Parent University. The purpose of Parent University is to help our parents gain a better of understanding of different topics or initiatives related to Peterson and the District.
Our first Parent University will be Assessments Throughout the Year. It will be on Monday, November 18th from 5:30-6:30 in the LMC. During this university, we will share the assessments the district uses, timeline for assessments, and how those assessments as well as other pieces of evidence are used to determine placement in our Project Arrow and Math Acceleration programs. Please note, this presentation will not be a time to discuss concerns or questions specific to your child. It is our hope that after attending the university, you will have a better understanding of our assessments and how they are used to ensure our students are achieving their highest potential.

District 204’s bond referendum—which would fund $420 million of districtwide safety and facility improvements without a tax rate increase—appears near the end of the ballot. View ballot language and sample ballots at ipsd.org/saferstronger204. · Security upgrades at all 33 schools would be addressed first, including the addition of secure-entry vestibules, access controls, intrusion detection systems, lockdown-safe doors, and surveillance equipment. · Districtwide infrastructure improvements include roofing, HVAC/air quality, window replacement, energy-efficient systems, electrical, technology upgrades, plumbing, exterior wall repairs, and parking/sidewalk enhancements. · Renovation of schools to provide quality learning spaces districtwide include the comprehensive renovation of Waubonsie Valley High School, Hill Middle School, and Gregory Middle School; reconfiguring Neuqua Valley High School to reintegrate freshmen; and expanding elementary school space on the north side of the District. · Operational efficiency improvements include repurposing the Birkett Freshman Center and closing and selling the underutilized Wheatland and Indian Plains building.
All 33 District schools would benefit from the improvements.

Student Attendance Letters
The first quarter ends on Friday, October 25. As stated in the attendance email from Dr. Talley, every absence is recorded as part of the student’s attendance record and counts toward chronic absenteeism. Please note vacations, practices/competitions, birthday celebrations, and similar leisure activities are not considered valid causes for absences.
As a reminder, students who have missed 10% or more of the school year, including absences with and without valid cause will receive an attendance letter.
Safety Concerns
Unfortunately, our community and I continue to witness unsafe driving behavior. We have drivers who are continuing to disobey the crossing guards while students are at or in the crosswalks, drivers who are making u-turns in the middle of Honey Locust, and trying to pick up students from the blacktop off of Honey Locust. Please the safety of all of our students is critically important! I continue to work with our police and district on this issue. I also highly encourage you to fill out the non-emergency form below. We expect our students to follow the expectations, I expect our families to do so too.
