Chinese Masks
Megan Boye
Background History
A mask is a covering for all or part of the face, worn as a disguise, to amuse, or terrify others. In Chinese culture masks were thought of as being a form of communication between mortal men and the immortal gods. They were thought to bring blessings, drive away evil spirits, ward off diseases and protect the owner from various disasters. Some examples of Chinese masks include exorcising masks, sorcerer's mask, Tibetan masks, Shamanic masks, theatrical masks and New Year's Eve masks. In Chinese culture individual colors represent different characteristics. For example red masks represent prosperity and bravery, while white masks represent evil and being hypercritical. Purple masks represent justice and sophistication, black represents integrity and impartiality, blue represents stubbornness and fierceness. Green shows that a character is violent and impulsive, while yellow represents a cruel and ambitious character. Gold and silver masks are used to represent divine beings such as a god, demon, spirit, or ghost. Masks were made out of a variety of materials such stone, glass, leather, cloth, wood, or paper.
