St Francis de Sales - 10 August 2021
TRACY'S MESSAGE
Kia Ora Ano
Wow what a wild 24-hours weather wise we have had…you wouldn’t know it this morning though!
Please click here to read our emergency procedures – it is important that all whānau know what we do in an emergency. Any questions please feel free to email or pop in and ask. This is a great opportunity to update your emergency pick up list. A GoogleDoc was shared at the beginning of the year – here is the link if you need it.
I have previously shared with you, our whānau, the professional learning and development our staff have undertaken to successfully implement the KiVa programme into our School.
St Francis de Sales School defines bullying as harmful or degrading behaviour or treatment which is deliberate, repeated and targeted. Bullying is not a conflict, an argument or a fight.
We’re proud to be a KiVa school. KiVa, meaning kind or nice, is an approach to bullying prevention that has been developed by the University of Turku in Finland. KiVa has had a significant impact on reducing incidents of bullying internationally and in schools across New Zealand. It also shows increased feelings of learner well-being at school.
Your tamariki will continue to be part of regular KiVa learning sessions throughout this year where the focus is on bullying prevention. The aim is for our learners to gain the knowledge to identify bullying and confidence to know what to do if they experience or witness bullying, to support their peers.
KiVa will be visible in many ways in the daily life at our school. The KiVa lessons include discussion, group work, short videos and role play. Many lessons concentrate on the role a group (bystanders) can have in helping to stop bullying. The learners think about and practice different ways to stand up to bullying. The lessons are supplemented by on-line activities which your child can share with you at home through the KiVa games.
Our kura has a KiVa team, this consists of myself, Sarah, Bev and Chris. Together with the class teacher we manage reported bullying cases by having short discussions with the learners involved, using the research-based approach.
If you suspect your child is either being bullied or bullying others, please contact us here at school so that the matter can be responded to as soon as possible. If you want to find out more the KiVa Parents’ Guide is available on the KiVa website at www.kivaprogram.net/parents.
On Friday at the Ranginui hui kaikaio celebrated learners’ achievement with certificates and values cards. I have to say that they are a calm and delightful bunch of humans and a real credit to their whanau. Petra was awarded the Principal’s cup for always contributing selflessly to our kura community.
Have a wonderful rest of the week and take care.

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Further to our correspondence last week you are all aware that our principal, Tracy Gundesen, is resigning as principal this year. Whilst we are sad to see Tracy leave our school the Board of Trustees needs to begin the process of appointing a new principal as soon as possible.
It is important that we ensure our new principal has all the skills, abilities and knowledge needed to lead our school into the future. With this in mind we are asking all members of our school community to share their thoughts about the sort of person they would like as the new principal of St Francis de Sales School.
If you would like to have some input into this, please respond to the survey link below by Wednesday 11 August. https://forms.gle/KWVL7yBiMsqQLaJL7
Thank you.

If you are having trouble with your existing KINDO account (or are having issues starting one), please feel free to pop into the school office and see Fran or Suzanne for assistance.
INJURIES AND ILLNESS
Our policy around any head injuries is that we notify parents if a child receives any type of bump/knock to the head.
In the case of a minor head injury, you will receive a text message. Anything more serious we will call. If you receive a text and are concerned please feel free to call us back for further details.
ABSENCES
The process for absences is if your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, we ask that you let the school office know each day by 9.00am so that their absence can be accounted for.
You can do this by sending in a notification via our school app, calling the school and leaving a message on the absence line or emailing the school office.
This is most important to alleviate any concerns about their whereabouts. If no communication has been received from parents, then the school will contact you by text message. If you receive a text message please reply to the message or call the school office as soon as possible advising the reason for absence. Any planned absences longer than 2 days need to be advised by an email or note to the school office—office@sfds.school.nz
