NMS Update 9.22.2024
Northfield Middle School 24 -25
Stay Put Reminder
Middle School Families:
The district has implemented the Crisis Go app to improve communication in emergencies. The app includes immediate access to the district’s crisis plan, allows for immediate mass communication to staff, and centralizes offsite attendance when evacuation is needed.
Part of this implementation is to have practice using the app. Next Monday, September 23, 2024, Northfield Middle School will run a duck and cover/stay-put drill using the Crisis Go app at the beginning of 1st hour. During these drills, administrators will send out a “roster event” to allow all staff members to account for students and identify any missing students. An alarm will be sent to every staff laptop and staff mobile device. As a reminder, a “duck and cover” drill has students shelter in place with doors locked, blinds closed, and everyone follows the direction of the classroom adult to find a safe place to hide. This part of the drill typically takes 5 minutes. We then use our PA system to give an all-clear and transition into a “stay-put.” A “stay-put” is when teaching and learning continue as planned, but students and staff are not allowed in the hallways until the situation (in this case, the drill) is resolved.
Minnesota Statute 121A.038 permits parents to opt their student(s) out of this type of required safety drill. If you would like to opt your student out of the drill, please notify the school office. You can keep your student(s) home prior to the start of the drill and return them to school after the drill is completed. This absence will be excused and no adverse action will be taken due to their absence.
If your student has experienced violence or trauma that this drill might reactivate, please notify the school office so we can support them.
Again, these required drills aim to help students and staff know how to respond in an emergency. These are skills we hope are never needed. We encourage you to talk with your student about the drill and why it is important to take the drills seriously. Ask them what happened and what they learned during the drill. Please reach out to Michael O’Keefe or I if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Greg Gelineau

Picture Days
Josten's has an online order form to use after pictures have been taken: jostenspix.com Please use event code FE72724 when placing your order online. All students should have their picture taken in order to be in the yearbook and to receive a student ID. An additional picture day will take place on Tuesday, October 1 (7:30-11:00 am), for students needing retakes or if they did not take their photo in August. On October 1 we will call students down alphabetically. Students and staff are encouraged to have their picture taken regardless if they plan to order. We will print a student & staff ID for the 2024-2025 school year with the new photo. Note that you will need to have your student’s lunch pin to access their pictures and place an order if you choose. A student lunch pin may be found in Skyward/Family Access. If you have questions please contact Kari Hartwig at khartwig@northfieldschools.org.
