Lathrop Lowdown
Lathrop High School, Vol.2, Ed.3 - October 2024
A Message from the Principal
Dear Lathrop High Families,
As we enter October, we are filled with pride over the incredible level of student engagement we’ve seen so far this school year. Our Spartans are showing a tremendous commitment to their education, both inside and outside the classroom. In fact, our student engagement rate for events and activities is currently at an impressive 79%! This is a reflection of how dedicated our students are to making the most of their high school experience, which increases connectedness to school and learning.
Involvement in school activities plays a crucial role in our students' overall success. When students are engaged beyond academics, whether through sports, clubs, or school events, they build important skills like teamwork, leadership, and time management. These experiences help them grow into well-rounded individuals, ready to take on the world after graduation.
To keep this momentum going, we encourage parents and guardians to support their Spartan in getting involved. Here are some ways you can help:
1. Talk to your Spartan about what activities or interests excite them. There are so many opportunities available, from athletics and academic clubs to art and music programs.
2. Attend school events together—whether it's a game, a performance, or a club meeting, your presence makes a big difference.
3. Check the school website and social media for announcements about upcoming events, club sign-ups, and new opportunities. Make sure your student stays informed.
4. Encourage balance between academics and extracurricular activities, ensuring your student is staying on top of schoolwork while enjoying their time in activities that they’re passionate about.
Your involvement and encouragement go a long way toward ensuring that your student gets the most out of their high school experience. Students who participate in extracurricular activities are more likely to feel connected to their school community, perform better academically, and develop strong social and emotional skills.
Together, we can continue to support our students in making this a successful and enriching school year. Thank you for partnering with us to help every Spartan thrive!
Sincerely,
Melissa Beattie, Ed.D.

Pink Out Football Game
Dear Lathrop Families and Community,
As we enter the month of October, we are reminded that it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time set aside to honor the strength, courage, and resilience of those who have faced or are still facing this life-altering battle. At Lathrop High School, we have always strived to show our support through our Pink Out-themed games, but this year, we want to add deeper meaning and connection to these events.
With that in mind, Lathrop High ASB warmly invites all breast cancer survivors, current fighters, and their families to join us on October 23rd, where we will take a moment to recognize and celebrate your unwavering bravery, determination, and spirit. You are not alone in this fight, and your stories inspire us all. We want to honor your journey in a way that goes beyond words – by standing together as a community united in support, hope, and love.
Please join us for this special evening as we come together to raise awareness, show support, and make this Pink Out game an event full of heartfelt meaning and connection. We would be truly honored to have you with us.
With gratitude and admiration,
Lathrop High School ASB
Behind the SHIELD - Reporting Concerns
Lathrop High School administration values the partnership that we have with parents in ensuring that our students are physically and emotionally safe at school. If you ever have a concern related to any of the following topics, we have a space for parents and community members to report concerns.
- Harassment/Bullying
- Physical/Mental Health
- Vandalism
- Campus Facilities
- Safety Concerns
These reports go straight to administration so that concerns can be addressed in a timely manner. You can access the report by going to the LHS website, under “Our School” and clicking on “LHS Resources”.

Learning Corner: MAP
MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) is our reading and math assessment tool which allows us to evaluate students' understanding of fundamental math and ELA concepts three times per year.
At LHS, we believe that MAP matters and that this is a way for students to demonstrate growth. Please ask your student about the recent assessment and if they met their MAP growth target for fall.
Take a look at the Quick Guide to High School MAP Testing below. Our next assessment is the start of Term 2 in January.

Wrestling Volunteering
Last Saturday, Sep. 28, the Lathrop High School Wrestling Team volunteered with Lathrop Police Department, The Healthy Room Project, and Cops For The Community. They helped transform a room for a family in need.
The Healthy Room Project gave the family furniture, beds, bedding, desks, etc. that was needed to help support the children in need. Damian Ceja Ramirez, Daniel Narvaez, Lily Corona, Nhandy Pham, Sophia Preston, Timothea Maycon, and Adrian Howard accompanied wrestling head coach, Mitchell Selna this past weekend to get the job done. Daniel Narvaez said, “It was so cool to help those kids out. It feels good knowing that we were able to give to a family that needed it.” Damian Ceja Ramirez said, “It is nice to help, but it also makes us appreciate what we have and the life we have been living.”
The wrestling team has had a relationship with the Lathrop Police Department since volunteering last year with Toys for Tots and Cocoa with Santa, and since hosting a First Responders Night during a dual meet. Head Coach Mitchell Selna said, “We volunteered quite a bit last year, but we have been wanting to do more. We are very grateful for the Lathrop Police Department and Cops For The Community for including us in the amazing work they do.
The city of Lathrop has provided so much to our students, it is only right for us to give back whenever possible. The kids always really enjoy it, and our goal is to not to just wrestle, but to continue to create bonds within the community that supports us.”
