First competition completed, House of Cards prepares for Troy match March 29-30
With the first competition under its belt, the Davison High School House of Cards FIRST Robotics Team 3534 is preparing for the upcoming match in Troy in hopes of securing a spot once again at the World Championships.
While the team designed and built a great robot - named Maroon 4 - the House of Cards was eliminated in the semifinal games at last weekend's season opener at Kettering University.
"It had no breakdowns and only minimal maintenance needed," said Gina Rose, the team's Business Coach. "We even feather dusted it! Certainly needed a lot of tuning to the controls, but the team made steady improvements and finished strong."
After day one, the House of Cards was ranked 20 out of 40 teams. The team discovered some issues in the programming, made these adjustments and with only four matches to play on Saturday, were able to climb back up to 12th place. The House of Cards was selected by the 7th alliance captain to compete in the semifinals but, unfortunately, were eliminated in the semifinal games.
Rose said the highlight of the event was winning the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors. This award celebrates the team that demonstrates industrial design principles, striking a balance between form, function and aesthetics. Per the judges, "this team's design focused on speed and a modular design. Their bot has components that can be easily removed and repaired. The multisided intake design made us wonder how it would perform. It quickly travels the field to deliver notes to the speaker with moves like Jagger."
The House of Cards team roster includes students Joshua Beller, Shupra Boudagh, Kevin Liang, Manny Mireles, Jameson Murphy, Riley O'Toole, Connor Rose, Elijah Sanders, Chloe Thompson, Nathaniel Tober, Devin Vo and Laney Wolschleger. Along with Rose, team coaches are Dylan McIntire, Head Coach; and Chris Purdy, Drive Coach. Mentors are Malachi Bergman, Tony Thompson, Richard Herta and Alex Debusschere.

Positivity Project
Next week's Character Trait: Love of Learning
Next week we will begin learning about love of learning. Those who exemplify love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize or a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.
People who love learning experience positive feelings in the process of acquiring skills, building on existing knowledge, or learning something completely new. Over time, individuals with this strength may develop deep and wide knowledge. Their knowledge enables them to make significant contributions to others’ understanding.
