It's hard to believe that we're already half way through the school year and wrapping up Term 1. On behalf of the entire Islander Team, we want to congratulate our students for their hard work, perseverance, and efforts. Thank you, Islander Families, for your unwavering support.

Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025 is the last day of the term. Final transcript grades for semester 2 of Term 1 will be available on Synergy on Jan. 31, 2025. As the term comes to a close, please encourage your student(s) to check Canvas, touch base with teachers, and turn in any missing assignments and make up work.

Term 2 Schedules - Counselors will be making changes to balance courses over the next week, so please be sure to view your schedule in Student Vue or pick-up hard copies in the quad after finals on your designated day.

Remediation of Courses Policy: Students earning a D or an F in a UC A-G course will be required to remediate the course to a C or higher. Required remediation may be via course repetition, online credit recovery, and/or summer school. CHS counseling will provide families with necessary information about the way in which your CHS student will remediate a UC A-G course D or F grade. Note: graduation requirement courses that do not factor into A-G completion must be remediated if student earns an F. See CHS Student/Family Handbook for more information.

College and Career Day! On January 27th, the first morning of term 2, CHS will have a College and Career Day for ALL students! There will be a presentation by the counselors, including course selection, a professional career panel, and a college and career fair with many universities, all branches of the military, community colleges, trade schools, gap year programs and a wide variety of career paths. This event is required for all grade levels and attendance will be taken. Students will attend their first day of Term 2 classes in the afternoon. (see flyer below)

• Grades 9, 10 and 11 arrive at school at 8:30 am

• Grade 12 arrives at school at 9:30 am

AP Test SPRING Term Registration is January 12, 2025 until February 28, 2025.

Late registration for Fall classes will incur a $40 late fee during that time

The CHS front office will be closing early, at 3:15pm, on February 5th and 19th due to all staff trainings.

NHS tutoring: Our NHS tutors are available to provide support in any content area with students in all grade levels. This is an excellent way for students to get some extra support with their classes!

This week: NHS tutors will be available Tuesday after school from 3:35-4:35 in room 511, but will not be available Thursday due to finals’ schedule. Once next term is under way, NHS tutors will be back in action. Keep your eyes open for their starting date.

National Honor Society (NHS) New Member Applications: Attention 10th and 11th graders: New member applications will open in March. Students who are interested in applying for membership will need the following:

• a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, a teacher recommendation, and TEN hours of community service. Current 10th and 11th grade students who meet the criteria are eligible to apply.

Student IDs: Please remind your student to carry their ID.

Athletics: Spring Sports are just around the corner and register now to start learning about pre-season workouts.

Bikes, helmets, and personal items: We would like to remind all students to lock their bikes and secure personal items (e.g., bike helmets) during the school day. Students are encouraged to lock their helmets directly to their bikes for added security. Please note that CHS is not responsible for the loss of personal belongings. Thank you for helping us with these important reminders.

Campus Safety: Guests are required to always check in at the front office. ALL visitors must present their identification when visiting campus.

REQUIREMENT FOR ALL SENIORS - AB469

The AB469 legislation requires all California seniors to complete ONE of the following before the end of their senior year. You must complete the requirement prior to purchasing a grad nite and/or prom ticket as well.

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

2. An application for the California Dream Act (CADAA) (for undocumented students)

3. To submit an “opt-out” form

SCHOLARSHIPS! New Scholarships Posted This Week!

• San Diego Foundation Scholarship Opens on January 15th!

Local Scholarships are now available in Xello in addition to the national scholarships! The counselors will be adding scholarships weekly going forward as they become available. The majority of the ones we add are either local to Coronado or San Diego, therefore you have an increased chance of receiving those. Seniors received a detailed email regarding scholarships to their school email on Friday, November 8th.

Coronado Soroptimist Service Award: Do you know a young woman between the ages of 14 and 18 who exhibits leadership qualities as a volunteer in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you know a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then she may be eligible for a Soroptimist International of Coronado Service Award

The Service Award recognizes young women leaders who make the community and world a better place through volunteer effort. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2025. Click HERE for more information and to apply.

NEW! TERM 2 INTERNSHIP INTEREST MEETING: Wednesday, January 29th at Lunch

We will be having an internship informational session on Wednesday, January 29th at Lunch in Room 202. Come learn about internships offered in the Coronado community where you can earn high school credit! A few of our internship partners that have opportunities are the Coronado Historical Association, Safe Harbor, Reading Legacies and others! NEW! Swim Instructor Job Opening: Legacy Swim Academy is hiring part time (4-20 hrs.) swim instructors at $18-$20 per hour. Legacy Swim Academy operates at the BBMAC pool after school and is able to work with students’ sports and school schedules. Please email resume to info@legacyswimacademy.com.

NEW! UC BERKELEY embARC Summer Design Academy

The embARC Summer Design Academy is a 4-week summer design intensive that brings together high school students from diverse backgrounds to explore architecture, urban design and sustainable city planning at UC Berkeley, one of the world's top ranked universities.

How to apply? Any high school student who is a rising junior or senior and will be 16 years old by July 6, 2025 is eligible to apply. You must submit the following by the application deadline:

• Completed online application with essay

• $75 application fee*

• High school transcripts that include all grades from 9th grade through the fall semester preceding your application

• English language exam scores (required of international students)

• Letter of recommendation from a high school guidance counselor, teacher, principal or community leader

The priority application deadline for campus housing and financial aid is February 18, 2025. The final application deadline for students who don't require campus housing is April 15, 2025.

Student Board Members
San Diego County Office of Education is looking for five dedicated and passionate sophomore or junior students to serve on the board for two meetings beginning in spring of each year.

Students interested in applying to be a Student Board Member must complete an online application form by 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2025. If a student is unable to complete the application online, please email Matt Hayes. Selected students will be presented to the board for official appointment at its April meeting.

RYLA is a program sponsored by Rotary International for the purpose of encouraging students to become more effective leaders. Through participation in an all-expense paid 3-day camp, students are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional nationally-recognized speakers, experience growth through a mix of fun and thought-provoking activities and are challenged by opportunities to discuss ethical and social issues. Has your child been absent or tardy? Detentions & Saturday School:

• *NEW* Detention options for students. (1) Meet with Mrs. Lewis for “Breakfast Buddies” to assist with Village Elementary students; or (2) Meet with Mr. Kusserow for “campus beautification” at CHS. Both options occur on Thursday mornings from 7:30 a.m. - 8:10 a.m. Students should speak to either administrator for more details or to sign-up.
• Detention is also held on Monday afternoon (3:40 p.m.), Thursday morning (7:20 a.m.) and Thursday afternoon (3:40 p.m.). Students must attend detentions to clear tardies.
• Students may also attend Saturday Enrichment to clear tardies and absences. January’s Saturday Enrichment will be held on Saturday, January 11, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

CHS Saturday School 2024-25

Independent Study Contract: California has changed the Independent Study Contract requirements for 2024-25. Currently, students who have a planned absence of 1 (or more) consecutive days of school may complete an Independent Study Contract with the prior approval of a CHS administrator. When successfully completed, an ISC enables students to remain on track with their learning in the classroom. It also allows the District to recoup the loss of funding caused by the absence. In order to be approved, please submit an ISC request to the front office at least three school days before the absence begins to allow teachers an opportunity to organize the work for students. For more information, please contact Noila Perri (noila.perri@coronadousd.net) in the main office.

Students Leaving Early: Please remember to contact the office, in advance, via note or phone call if your student will be leaving campus early. Students MUST be checked out through the office and are required to have a pass to be released from their classroom.
