The DE Dispatch
NVCC's Dual Enrollment News (June 2016)
What a Year...and We Could Not Have Done it Without You!
Record numbers of Northern Virginia high school students are building their college transcripts with both general education as well as Career and Technical Education college credits. We have added 67 new Dual Enrollment Adjuncts and 226 new sections of DE courses. Additionally, 228 dual enrollment students have been recognized for making NOVA's Fall 2015 Presidential Scholar's and Deans' list (see complete list below.)
We are excited to share what is happening in DE across Northern VA with you. By suggestion, this year the Dispatch is serving as an annual update rather than a quarterly newsletter. We have also organized the territory updates by school district rather than NOVA campus to better serve our district partners . We welcome any feedback from you in order that the Dispatch best deliver important DE news.
The Office of DE Welcomes New Director Amy Nearman
I am very excited to be leading a small but mighty team focused on Dual Enrollment at NOVA. We are experiencing great growth and I see that growth continuing as more schools, students and families learn about the many benefits of earning college credit in high school.
I joined NOVA in October 2014 and have enjoyed serving as the DE Coordinator for the Loudoun Campus. Prior to NOVA, I was a high school French teacher and private school administrator. Before education, I worked in marketing and project management.
My main goal for the Office of Dual Enrollment is to focus on providing excellent customer service to our partner schools. We have been looking at processes to ensure we are working as efficiently and effectively as possible. I look forward to meeting our other school district partners in the near future. Please reach out at any time with questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Amy Nearman

How to Request NOVA Transcripts and Enrolling in NOVA Campus Courses
Many DE students also decide to take advantage of their summer by taking additional NOVA courses on campus. We welcome this but the process for enrolling in these courses is different than the process for enrolling in contract DE courses. The following link explains all the steps necessary to enroll in campus courses https://www.nvcc.edu/dual-enrollment/checklist.html. It is important to note all DE students have holds on their accounts that prevent them from enrolling in NOVA courses on their own. They must go to campus and meet with a Student Services counselor prior to enrolling.
Get Ahead this Summer
If able, please plan to participate in your NOVA campus convocation. Many campuses will host cluster meetings for each teaching area. This is a great opportunity to meet NOVA campus faculty and fellow DE colleagues, and share best practices. Please continue to check your e-mail this summer for specific campus dates and times.
Did you know your contract DE students are REALLY NOVA students and have the same access to all NOVA services as a campus-based NOVA student would have? This includes library, tutoring, counseling services, student activities, etc.. Please think about a NOVA campus field trip early in the semester. This will help students understand the plethora of resources available to them as well as secure their NOVA ID which will help them to more readily access these resources.
Also, be on the look out for the DE Instructor Orientation we will be asking all DE teachers to complete. It is a power point presentation that provides important information every DE instructor needs to know in order to best serve their DE students. It will serve as a great overview for our new DE instructors and a refresher for our veteran instructors.
Alexandria City Public Schools
The dual enrollment program within Alexandria City Public Schools has continued to flourish. ACPS saw increases in enrollments in general education classes like English Composition, World Literature and U.S. History but also saw increases in career and technical education classes like Entrepreneurship and Auto Tech. Students in Mr. Jackson’s Automotive III had the opportunity to enroll in AUT 242- Electricity II and AUT 266-Automotive Alignment, Suspension & Steering for the first time this year.
In addition to the over 50 credits available to ACPS students through dual enrollment, ACPS will expand their DE offerings next year to include classes in Early Childhood Education and will offer BUS 165- Small Business Management to their second level Entrepreneurship students.
Arlington County Public Schools
The 2015-2016 school year has been an exciting one for Arlington Public Schools (APS). Ana Lily Caballero was hired as the APS/NOVA Partnership Coordinator. She works with both APS and NOVA to increase DE offerings and support the existing classes and program. For the fall semester, APS enrolled 51% more DE students than in 2014-15 school year. This increase came as a result of new offerings in math and social studies. This year saw the expansion of dual enrollment math classes at New Directions and HB Woodlawn. Arlington also offered DE Government (PLS 135/136) for the first time at Langston High School. This course was open to all APS students after the traditional school day.
Arlington Public Schools also continues to develop new and exciting programs involving dual enrollment career and technical education classes. APS will offer Entrepreneurship (BUS 116) at several high schools next year. Additionally, the Arlington Career Center will offer dual enrollment Cyber Security courses for the first time next year.
Arlington has also developed a plan for students enrolled in a special program at the Arlington Career Center/Arlington Tech to earn an Associate of Science Degree in Computer Science through dual enrollment. Students will apply to this program and be selected into this cohort program. Students in this program will graduate from high school with an AS in Computer Science in 2018.
Falls Church City Public Schools
Falls Church City Public Schools has quickly expanded their dual enrollment offerings at George Mason High School this past year. New during the 2015-2016 school year was the dual enrollment U.S. History (HIS 121/122) class. Next year students will have the opportunity to take English Composition I and II (ENG 111/112) and Introduction to Physics I and II (PHY 101/102). George Mason High School plans to offer a Humanities/Fine Arts elective course in Theatre. These courses allow George Mason High School students to almost complete NOVA’s General Education Certificate completely through dual enrollment.
Fairfax County Public Schools
This school year Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) grew considerably in both dual enrollment course offerings and total enrollments. FCPS increased the total number of enrollments by over 70%. Dual enrollment classes were offered for the first time at three additional FCPS high schools. Students at various high schools and academies in the county were offered new opportunities to dual enroll in new Career and Technical Education courses. Dual enrollment courses were introduced in Early Childhood Education, Criminal Justice, Health Sciences and Engineering programs throughout the district. While the majority of the new dual enrollment courses were in Career and Technical Education, Fairfax County Public Schools also expanded opportunities for students to take general elective dual enrollment courses. South Lakes High Schools offered HIS 111 and HIS 112 (History of World Civilizations I and II) for the first time with four sections of students. Elsewhere around the county, the majority of high schools offering ENG 111 and 112 (College Composition I and II) increased the amount of sections from last year.
Staying with this trend, FCPS is continuing to expand their DE offerings for next year. Robinson Secondary School will offer dual enrollment classes in Early Childhood Education. West Springfield High School will offer dual enrollment PLS 211 and 212 (U.S. Government I and II) for the first time. Additionally, the Fairfax Online Campus will offer both ENG 111 and 112 and PLS 211 and 212 for any interested FCPS senior. This opportunity allows students to take dual enrollment courses which are not typically offered at their high school.
Loudoun County Public Schools
Loudoun County Public Schools has once again increased the number of students taking Dual Enrollment courses to over 2,000 enrollments for the fall semester and another 2,000 for the spring! The most popular course offerings are English Composition and U.S. History, which is a new offering this school year. Monroe Technology Center has increased their offerings in Horticulture, First Aid and CPR. More students are taking advantage of the free tuition opportunity and starting their college transcript with NOVA.
LCPS is looking to increase the History course offerings next year and move toward a Global Studies General Education Certificate. Students will be able to complete one year of college while focusing on global issues.
Just like last year, many LCPS students have received their NOVA Card ID badge.
Special thank you to our NOVA Card staff at the Loudoun campus for going out to the schools and photographing students. With a college ID, students can easily take advantage of on-campus services, check out books from the library and are eligible for discounts at area businesses.
Manassas City Public Schools
Manassas Park Public Schools
A special shout out to Frank Kasik, ENG 111/112 who is retiring this June. Frank has taught DE at Manassas Park for many years and will greatly be missed. We hope one day to maybe see Frank teaching again at NOVA?!
Paul VI
Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax offered 7 different NOVA courses through dual enrollment this year. Next year they plan on offering several new world language courses including SPA 201 and 202 and German 101 and 102. In addition to world language offering, Paul VI will also offer BIO 205 (Microbiology) for next year.
Prince William County Public Schools
Battlefield high school also touts robust DE offerings on the western end of the county for its students. In addition to College Composition and Political Science, its students can earn 37 college credits towards IT certificates or degrees.
In addition to expanded general education offerings, PWCS also offers DE Welding and HVAC as transfer specialty programs at Potomac and Freedom high schools respectively. These programs culminate with graduating high students being shy of only one additional college course within each program in order to earn a Certificate of Study in Welding or HVAC. These are both burgeoning, high demand fields that will provide ample opportunities for students to be gainfully employed upon graduating. Some students plan to have a career in these fields and others plan to use the income to finance their college degree.
Meet the PWCS HVAC Students and NOVA Faculty!
The Seton School
Wakefield School
We are pleased to welcome Wakefield School in the Plains as our newest school division. Wakefield will be offering PLS 241/242 for the 2016-17 school year. They hope to expand their offerings in the near future.
