Where Learning is Personal
Friday, April 11, 2025
From the Principal
It’s been a focused and productive week across all grade levels. Our Primary students, especially in 2nd grade, enjoyed a creative math activity called “I mustache you a question,”. I was smiling all day after leaving their classroom. In Intermediate, students continue to engage with new content and develop strong academic habits. Track season is off to a great start on the athletics front, with our first meet scheduled for Tuesday, April 15th, at Benjamin School. A quick reminder: we are looking for two parent volunteers to assist with timing or field events—please contact Mr. Kahlfeldt if you’re available.
We’re also proud to share the work of our Student Leadership Team, who traveled with staff to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans to deliver our school’s donations! We all should be proud of their leadership and service. These moments remind us that learning extends beyond the classroom. As we enter the final weeks of the school year, we see students and teachers give their best effort each day—and it’s making a real impact. Thank you for your continued support!
Student Showcase 2025: Unmasking Our Superpowers 🦸♂️🦸♀️
Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Winfield School will open its doors to families and community members for our annual Student Showcase Night. This year’s theme is “Unmasking Our Superpowers.”
This is more than an open house that celebrates student growth, creativity, and achievement. Students from all grade levels will share the learning that has helped them develop their unique academic and creative “superpowers.”
🎭 What to Expect: Throughout the building, each grade level will showcase student work in various ways, from interactive displays and performances to creative demonstrations and hands-on exhibits. We’re also excited to bring back the Book Fair in the Library so families can continue to support literacy at home.
🎟️ Don’t Miss:
Raffle Prizes throughout the evening—students will receive tickets to enter at various tables and displays!
Spirit Week (April 21–25): Each day will feature a fun theme to build energy leading into the Showcase Night.
Student Leaders: Our Student Leadership Team will be helping with welcome tables and ticket distribution to keep the night moving smoothly.
We’re looking forward to displaying every student’s strengths and connecting with our entire school community. Thank you for supporting this exciting event, at which learning truly becomes personal and powerful.
Stay tuned for more updates, including Spirit Week themes and classroom details. If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to contact the school office.
Let’s Unmask Those Superpowers, Tigers!

Tuesday, April 15, 2025 in the Primary Building we will be having our Kindergarten Preview Open House from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Parents and/or guardians of students residing within District #34, who will be 5 years of age on or before September 1, are invited to attend along with their child! Children and their grown ups are invited into the building to meet the kindergarten teachers and visit the kindergarten classrooms. This is an open house-style event but we do ask that you call Ms. Hernandez at 630-909-4901 to schedule your 25 minute time slot to visit the classrooms on April 15th. Plan to bring the following items: 3 proofs of residency (i.e. utility bill, driver's license, tax bill) and your child's birth certificate (county stamped original). We are looking forward to meeting our future Winfield Tigers
Zeman's Kicks for Kids Collection Starting April 21st
Please look through your closets for new/slightly worn shoes. Children and Adult shoes accepted. Funds2Orgs. pays us and gives the shoes to developing countries. We use the money to purchase new shoes for West Chicago Public School children in memory of Denise Zeman, our former physical education teacher.
Student Leadership Team
On Friday 3/28, Student Leadership Team traveled with Ms. Gaeta, Mr. Leisering, and Mr. Serbick to deliver our school's donations to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. We more than doubled our donation total from last year! The MSHV continues to be grateful for our community's generosity and support for local veterans. While there, SLT also helped to organize bags of essential household supplies that will go to help veterans in need. The staff was impressed by our students' helpfulness and leadership. We look forward to partnering again with them in the future.

Primary Team News
In math class, our 2nd graders have been focused on data collection and interpretation. We've learned about how to gather and record data in tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots. Then we make statements interpreting and comparing the data. We had fun with an “I moustache you a question…” activity. Each student wrote down a question they’d like together data on and then surveyed their classmates while wearing mustaches. Great job gathering and interpreting data, 2nd graders!
Intermediate Ideas
This week in math, third graders continued to work on finding the area of rectangular figures. In language arts, the students learned how to identify and use conjunctions in sentences. In 4th grade, students have started working on their showcase night projects. They are connected to our Novel Studies we’ve completed by Jaqueline Davies. They are very excited about this! We are on the next set of Greek and Latin roots and continue to examine how words work when you add prefixes/suffixes to word parts. In math, students are focusing on decimals. We are looking at how to connect fractions with tenths/hundredths and switch them to decimals. We looked at comparisons and addition as well. 3/4 Brach has begun a novel study entitled Lost Star which is a biography describing the life of Amelia Earhart. Students are creating a digital comic strip depicting the important events in Amelia's life. In 5th grade, students learned different strategies for dividing fractions. In reading, students began a unit where they are analyzing different perspectives on the American Revolution.
Middle School Messages
Students are winding up the year in math class with impressive progress. Eighth graders, along with some seventh graders, are gaining a solid understanding of linear functions (y=mx+b) and quadratic relationships, including the application of the Pythagorean theorem and scientific notation. Other seventh graders are enhancing their knowledge of percentages and rational numbers by engaging in practical applications such as calculating tax, tips, and discounts. These students will undoubtedly be valuable resources when you visit your favorite restaurants and stores.
Athletics and Clubs
Track
The season has started well and our first meet is next Tuesday, April 15th at Benjamin School. Please email Mr. Kahlfeldt if you can help time or run a field event - we need two parent helpers. We will practice next week on Monday and Wednesday only. Thanks for your support. Encourage your athletes to stretch and exercise each weekend so we can maintain our progress.
