Middle of the Year Screeners
Just like teachers give screeners at the beginning of the year, we give them again mid-year to ensure that students are on track with learning expectations. Over the next few weeks, teachers will give the DSA, Acadience (DIBELS), and the Numeracy screeners. Parents/Guardians will receive the scores to these assessments on the Progress Report sent home in February.
Developmental Spelling Analysis (DSA) - The purpose of the Developmental Spelling Analysis is to learn about the students' stages of spelling development. The DSA highlights specific strengths and weaknesses in spelling feature knowledge so that instruction can be tailored to the students' needs. Students are given twenty-five words to spell. The teacher calculates the number of words spelled correctly to determine where the student is placed for instruction.
Acadience/DIBELS (ORF) - The purpose of the ORF assessment is to screen and progress monitor students' reading. It is administered three times during the school year. It is used to determine whether students are making adequate progress and to determine if a student's instruction needs to be adjusted. On the ORF assessment, your child reads a passage appropriate for his/her grade level for one minute and the teacher calculates the words read correctly to get your child’s accuracy rate.
MOY Math Screener (Numeracy) - In the middle of the year, your child will be given a math assessment, where they will be asked approximately ten questions based on the current year grade-level content. These questions assessed your child's number sense, including counting, place value, multiplication & division, and fractions. Each child receives a total score that indicates their proficiency in mastering the content from the current grade level. This is different from the beginning of the year screener which assessed the previous year's grade level content.
100th Day of School
The 100th day of school will be celebrated on January 31st. We will be celebrating with a make your own trail mix of 100 items AND a friendly t-shirt competition. Teachers will be sending out a sign up for the trail mix this week.
