Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Students of Susan Nelson High School!
Happy Sunday!
I hope you've been having a great weekend!
And I also hope that the first week and a half have gone smoothly for our students as they start a new school year! Remember, the start of the school year is a new opportunity to start new habits that will help students to be successful. Last week we mentioned "Creating a schedule--and follow it" for school work assignments and breaks. This is SOOOO important! As we all know, a measure of self-discipline is needed to make sure we're keeping up with all the reading, assignments and online school activities that are required to be a successful independent studies student!
The other item we mentioend was "Prioritizing Tasks". This is a crucial one. Students need to be constantly asking, "What do I need to be doing, RIGHT NOW? Which assignments are due first? How long will each assignment take? Have I given myself ENOUGH TIME to get everything done by the time I need to go in for my weekly appointment with my Teacher?" These are important questions to ask as we seek to prioritize all the things we have to accomplish in a week!
I would just like to add that if you get stuck, or feel you need help on any of these habits, you can always talk with your supervising Teacher or our new Counselor, Ms. Mojica. We all want you to be successful...if you need help--ASK!!
Community Advisory Partners (CAP)
Each year we make plans about how we can improve our school! We also get special funds from the State that we use to implement our plans! As YOU are part of the Community, we want to get your input (both parents and students) about our plan and about how we use our funds! The meetings we have to get your input are called "Community Advisory Partners" Meetings (or CAP meeetings for short)! We'd love for you to join us at our next CAP meeting!!
Community Advisory Partners (CAP) Meeting
Wednesday, September 4th
3:00 - 3:45 pm
It will be in person at Susan Nelson High School
All students and parents are welcome!
If you can't make this first CAP meeting we'll be having several others. The next ones will be on January 22nd and March 19th!
Have a great week!!!
Sincerely,
David Schlottman

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We’re excited to introduce our new Staff Spotlight feature! This week, we’re highlighting Mr. Tucker, who proudly represents UC Riverside. Many of our staff members have personal connections to UCR, either as proud alumni or through close ties with friends and family, highlighting the exceptional education and opportunities available right in our own backyard.
UC Riverside Facts:
Unique Campus Landmarks: UC Riverside is home to the Botanic Gardens, a hidden gem on campus that spans 40 acres with over 3,500 plant species. It’s a beautiful spot for students to study, relax, or explore nature.
Vibrant Campus Life: UCR offers over 500 student organizations, ensuring there’s something for everyone, whether your student is interested in cultural groups, academic clubs, or sports.
Additionally, don’t miss the City of Temecula College Fair on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Promenade Mall. It’s a great opportunity for students to explore colleges and start planning their futures. A flyer is attached for more details.
Warm regards,
Ms. Mojica

Coffee with the Principals:
Thursday, September 19, 2024
9:00 - 10:00 am & 6:30 - 7:30 pm (choose one that works for you!)
These will be very informal meetings and are only meant to meet you in person and say, “Hi!” and talk for a few minutes. You can stay as long (or as little) as you like! : ) If you have questions, concerns, comments or advice, feel free to come by and visit us. We're looking forward to meeting you!
Student Parking
As you probably have realized, our parking lot off of Pio Pico Road that serves as the entry point to the main office, is very small! It needs to accommodate teachers from the three schools at Sparkman (the Adult School, Susan Nelson, and Rancho Vista)--and of course, we want our parents
and visitors to have a spot, too! After that...there is NO MORE SPACE!
Students: please know that this main parking lot is not a place where you can park...I understand that's is super convenient...but we need the spots for staff, parents and visitors.
There is a student parking lot (as you can see in the picture below). There's plenty of space there...and I realize that you have to walk a bit to get to the front of the school! But there is parking!!!
As with all of our high schools in TVUSD, if you'd like to park in the student parking lot of off Margarita Road, you'll need a SHNS Parking Permit. The permit costs $15 (cash or check only).
Please click this link, print out the parking permit, sign it, and return it to Gloria Dixon with the $15 fee.
Opportunities for Students from the City of Temecula
The City of Temecula’s Workforce & Education Development Division has shared with us some upcoming events that can be a big benefit to our students!
- Rocktober is an annual fall music competition that will be held on Saturday, October 26th in the Temecula Valley region. This event is a celebration of young and talented musicians who come together to showcase their skills and compete for exciting prizes. The competition takes place at the Community Recreation Center Amphitheater and features a total of 16 bands and musicians delivering outstanding performances to both a lively audience and a panel of judges. Participants include solo singers and bands.
- The annual Young Women's Career Conference is a breakfast event scheduled for the Thursday, December 5th at the Temecula Conference Center from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This inspiring gathering brings together 150 high school girls from across Temecula, providing them with valuable insights into a wide array of career paths guided by empowering female industry leaders. Each year, the City invites a select number of students and a representative from each high school in the City. The City will share more information as we get closer to December! STAY TUNED!
See the flyers below for more information about each event!
