CORE VALUE FOR AUGUST IS WISDOM
Wisdom: Finding out what you should do and doing it
ASK A GROWN-UP:
• When you were growing up, who did you go to for advice and wisdom?
• Can you remember any bits of wisdom from your childhood that you still use as an adult?
ASK A KID:
• Who do you consider to be a good source of wisdom?
• If a younger friend or sibling came to you for advice, what wisdom would you share?
SEE IT:
The storybook character Winnie the Pooh often went to his friend Owl to seek advice.
Sometimes, this got a little bit confusing for the well-meaning Pooh bear. On one occasion,
Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore were seeking Owl’s wisdom, but couldn’t quite understand
Owl’s advice. When Owl recommended they “issue a reward” they thought Owl had
sneezed on the word “issue.” This led to a small bit of frustration and more confusion as
Owl explained that he had said “issue” not “achoo.” Take a minute and watch this video clip
on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkCMqhPULdc. For many of us, seeking
wisdom can be confusing, just like it was for Winnie the Pooh. Sometimes we have to really
listen and understand the advice someone is giving us. Many of us can remember things
that we heard from our parents, teachers, coaches, and other leaders that seemed confusing
when we first heard them, but have proven to be very wise bits of advice over time.
BE IT:
As a family, create a “wisdom board.” You could use a bulletin board, poster board, or
a journal notebook. Ask some people for wise bits of advice or research wise sayings on
the internet. Write them on your wisdom board and put it where you can see it every day.
Discuss these bits of wisdom and look for ways you can use this wisdom to “Make Smart
Decisions.”
One stop shopping for all things related to kids and social emotional concerns!
Look for those opportunities to praise them in ways that matter.
Crying is tough. Here's what's helpful.
We have to model regulation to help our kids regulate themselves
