Seal of Biliteracy
Ms. De La Rosa and Ms. Cruz
Dear Hoboken High School Families,
We are pleased to share that our district offers our students the chance to earn the Seal of Biliteracy. This is a designation from the State of New Jersey that shows that your child has demonstrated proficiency in a World Language, whether it was learned in school or it is a language the child speaks at home.
To earn the Seal, a student sits for an online assessment (AAPPL test) in school during the school day. We know which students in our World Language classes are good candidates to earn the Seal. We are asking you to let us know if you wish for your child to be tested in any other languages that they have learned outside of school.
To attain this seal, we are inviting juniors and seniors to take the AAPPL test, a nationally recognized assessment for reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a language other than English.
Please complete the form using the link below if you would like for your junior or senior student to take the Seal of Biliteracy exam.

National Honor Society
Mrs. McGreivey
We are getting close to the time of year when we begin the selection process for new members in the Arthur E. Stover Chapter of the National Honor Society. Below is an overview of the process we use, which is based on the national constitution of the National Honor Society.
Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and is based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Eligibility:
Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the sophomore or junior class.
To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been enrolled for a period equivalent to one semester at Hoboken High School.
Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for students first enrolled in Hoboken High School prior to September 2024. For students who enroll in September 2024 and later, the GPA shall be 3.25. .
Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.
Process:
a. Students who meet the eligibility requirements are notified by letter in school and are invited to join a Google Classroom for candidates. There they will complete the Candidate Information Form and the essay.
b. Once the deadline for submission arrives, we review the submitted materials.
c. Candidates who meet the other criteria (service, character and leadership) are interviewed by the Faculty Council.
d. We also request input from the entire HHS faculty regarding the candidates' leadership and character demonstrated in class as well as in extracurriculars.
e. Following the interviews, the Faculty Council votes on the candidates to select members.
f. Candidates become members after they participate in a formal induction ceremony.

College and Career Preparation for Seniors
Brag Sheets
All seniors, especially those applying to four year schools, should be completing a Brag Sheet about yourself that I have linked here. The information you provide will be helpful for your recommenders (and for me too since I write a letter for each of you as well). Please be as honest and thoughtful in your responses. This is your time to literally "brag" about yourselves so please do not be shy or reserved about your accomplishments and goals!
Letters of Recommendation
If you have not done so already, please make sure you are using the first few weeks of school to speak with teachers about writing a recommendation letter for college. Most schools will request two letters, so think about the teachers that know you the best and who might have taught subjects you could be interested in pursuing in college.
Narrowing the College Search
Some students may have a list of colleges already while others are still considering the right fits. I have a sheet (click here for it) that will hopefully allow students to:
Compare colleges that you are interested in by looking at key decision-making factors such as GPA requirements, standardized test scores (if necessary), school demographics, acceptance rate, and your personal opinions. My recommendation is to print out the PDF sheet and look it over with your family who I have also copied on this email. You can research and write down the key factors that call out to you. There is only space for seven colleges to compare, but of course you are welcome to look at and eventually apply to more schools should you wish.
Take advantage of resources/websites that have been created to help students filter down their college search based on a variety of factors. Through the PDF linked above, you can click on the hyperlinks for six different resources that have tools to assist with the college search process. Feel free to browse through each of them and find the one(s) you feel most comfortable with based on the information presented or the website interface itself.
Go on a virtual tour! I'm aware of how challenging it can be to visit schools, especially if you are considering schools further away. I've provided three resources that you can click on for virtual tours of campuses and to see the various facilities. It may not replicate an in-person visit, but it can certainly help if traveling for visits isn't feasible.
What About Paying for College?
Even though the official application for federal aid (the FAFSA) won't be available until October 1st, you can still take steps to prepare for the cost of college.
Click here for a breakdown I created of what specifically can be done now to prepare students and families to complete the FAFSA in October. It is important that you understand what documents you will need to make the application as seamless as possible.
Click here for more information on the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), which is a program for New Jersey residents with financial need who commit to attending a college or university in New Jersey.
Alternatives to College
A great deal of information that our Guidance department shares is related to the college search because it can be a timely and fairly detailed process. However, there are also many opportunities for students who wish to pursue opportunities after graduation that don't involve a two-year or four-year college. If you feel that you are in this position, and some of you have shared with me that you are, then there are many avenues that you can pursue after graduation.
Click here for a U.S. News & World Report article that does a nice job detailing the variety of potential options for students after high school.
Click here for a detailed look at vocational technical schools in New Jersey that operate adult postsecondary programs. These programs have agreed to meet the criteria developed by the Office of Career Readiness within the NJ Department of Education.
Click here to learn more about The New Jersey Apprenticeship Network (NJAN) that matches individuals seeking a career with potential employers and training providers. Oftentimes, individuals who enter into an apprenticeship will earn wages while learning a skill/trade on the job.

Math
Ms. Caradonio
Algebra 1
In Algebra 1 this week students are learning about key features of functions including positive and negative intervals, increasing and decreasing intervals, and maximum and minimum values. Using key features, students have been able to make their own graphs. Students are also analyzing and comparing graphs of real-world situations to see how key features and average rate of change can be used to make informed decisions.
Geometry
Students in Geometry have begun learning about congruence transformations. They have used rigid motions to identify corresponding parts and missing measurements of sides and angles, and to determine whether two figures are congruent. Students are now learning theorems to prove triangle congruence, including SAS, SSS, ASA, AAS and HL congruence theorems. These theorems allow students to prove triangles are congruent even if only three measurements are provided.
Algebra 2
In Algebra 2 students are learning about polynomial functions, and using key features to determine a function’s end behavior and sketch its graph. Students are able to use these key features to interpret graphs of polynomial functions. They learned methods to add, subtract and multiply polynomial expressions, and next week they will learn to divide polynomial expressions. Also students wrote polynomial functions to represent and compare real-world situations.
Science
Mr. Kopatsch
In CP Chemistry, students explored fundamental concepts of periodic trends and chemical bonding, focusing on ionic and covalent bonds. Through hands-on learning, they constructed their first molecule models, gaining a tangible understanding of chemical structures and how different elements interact and form compounds.
In Honors Physics, the class investigated the properties of matter across different states, examining gases, liquids, and solids with a focus on solid mechanics. Students learned about compression, tension, and structural design principles, such as why I-beams are shaped like a capital "I". Through engaging lab activities like building an arc from Pringles chips and measuring spring extensions under various weights, students applied scientific principles to practical experiments, calculating spring constants and developing a deeper comprehension of physical properties and mechanical behavior.
Engineering
Mr. Torres
Students in Engineering Design have been exploring the concept of Reverse Engineering. By carefully analyzing the visual, functional and structural aspects of a product, engineers are able to determine its function and consider improvements. In this project, students disassembled a wind up toy to carefully understand its internal make up and motion mechanism. Careful attention to detail is crucial in this process in order to understand where every piece fits and its intended purpose. Students were specifically challenged to crack open the gearbox and find the metal spring which is the heart of the toy, converting potential energy into kinetic energy.
Life Skills and Vocational Skills
Life Skills Class with Ms. Sivo, Ms. Lisa and Ms. Maria
The lessons this week on bilateral coordination focuses on enhancing interhemispheric interaction by engaging students in activities that require using both hands simultaneously. Students will manipulate materials to complete pictures by tracing symmetrical patterns with each hand, ensuring alignment and smooth movements. The lesson promotes fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and the integration of both brain hemispheres. Activities are designed to strengthen neural connections, improve motor planning, and foster precision through symmetrical tasks that challenge and develop bilateral coordination.
Vocational with Ms. Sivo, Ms. Lisa and MS. Maria
Students were introduced to the concept and purpose of a compass rose and its role in navigation and map reading. Students learned how to use a compass rose to determine cardinal directions. They also explored the parts of a map, including the map key, and understand how these elements provide important information. Through guided practice, students applied their learning by using a map to answer questions, identify locations, and navigate using the compass rose and map key. The lesson reinforced spatial awareness and practical map-reading skills.
Stay tuned for the lesson to be brought into the Hoboken Community!
Life Skills with Ms. Alt and Ms. Melendez
Ms. Alt and Ms. Melendez's Life Skills class have been learning about healthy snack options. As a class, we researched different healthy, easy snack choices. After deciding which snacks we wanted to try, we made our shopping list and went shopping at Shop Rite. The students navigated Shop Rite to find the items on the shopping list. We purchased the ingredients to make chia pudding with fruit, carrots with hummus and a variety of apples to try with peanut and almond butter. Following a recipe, the students made the chia pudding and it set overnight in the fridge. The next day was the taste test and it was a hit. We are going to enjoy the rest of our healthy snack options this week!
Social Studies
Holocaust, Genocide & Modern Humanity - Ms. Koerner
In commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, students in the history elective course Holocaust, Genocide and Modern Humanity learned about the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Auschwitz was the largest of the Nazi death camps. It is estimated that 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz. Students viewed the memorial service online at the United Nations this past Monday and researched a victim that perished during The Holocaust. Following, students created a memory candle for one of the victims and wrote about a connection they shared with this person. Some of the students found that they shared a musical connection, a love of food, a love of family, a love of learning, sports or other types of human connection. In this lesson, students discovered that behind the six million number of people that perished in The Holocaust, there were people, there were names and stories of lives lived and tragically lost.
World Languages
Mandarin - Ms. Simons
Happy Lunar New Year! May the year of the golden snake bring good fortune, prosperity, health and happiness to everyone. In class this week, students learned Chinese traditions to prepare for the arrival of the new year. The significance of thorough cleaning before the New Year, family reunions for dinner, giving red envelopes, wearing new red clothes, decorating homes, and honoring ancestors. They researched and presented the significance of the great race and the zodiac animals to each other. We celebrated new year's day with foods and treats that symbolize the luck, abundance and good fortune that they will bring us in the new year. We hung a poster to wish the HHS community a Happy Year of the Snake!
Ms. De La Rosa and Mrs. Cruz
Some of our Spanish classes are learning about Mexico's geography, history, economy, and culture this marking quarter. To support our students' authentic learning, we explored the topics of identity, history, economics, culture, diversity, contributions, and art across Mexican culture in a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We looked at the rich tradition of printmaking in Mexico—from the eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. José Guadalupe Posada, Mexico’s best known printmaker, was featured, especially his depictions of skeletons engaged in different activities, which helped establish a global identity for Mexican art. Printmaking was used by artists as a method to confront socio-political issues during the rise of Fascism. Printmaking was also used to reproduce Mexican murals from the 1920s and to create exhibition posters, prints for the popular press, and portfolios celebrating Mexican dress and customs (MET).
The students participated in an art studio workshop, which gave them the opportunity to create their own pieces of artwork. Our Studio Art Workshop was paired with a one-hour Exploring Art Across Cultures focused on the current Mexican Prints at the Vanguard exhibition tour with the 45-minute art-making experience
Culinary Arts
Chef Nelson
This week students in culinary one were able to finish their dumplings and begin cooking them. On Wednesday we made potstickers, and then Thursday we use the rest of the dumplings and boiled them. International pastries completed making Char Sui Bao and piggy egg custard bao.

Mr. Fernandes
This week in Drivers Ed, students explored key topics related to driver privileges and penalties, including the importance of sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, emergency vehicles, and buses. They also learned about the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors, such as driving under the influence, reckless driving, or accumulating repeat traffic violations that can lead to suspended driving privileges. Additionally, students discussed who has the “right of way” in various situations and the responsibilities of bike and e-scooter riders, who must follow the same rules as motor vehicle drivers. As the 2nd Marking Period winds down, students are eagerly preparing for their Drivers Ed final exam, looking forward to earning their learner's permit and taking the next step toward gaining real-world driving experience.
