A Message from the Superintendent
Our principals are fearless leaders who are entrusted with the responsibility to lead a school. They are expected to be knowledgeable, proactive, and engaged in advocacy to improve the lives of their students, teachers, and community. As a principal myself for 17 years, I appreciate the incredible job our principals do everyday. Principals impact outcomes for every student and every staff member in their school. The best investment a school district can make is finding and retaining effective principals and empowering them to lead their schools and make a positive difference in the lives of their students.
October is National Principals Month. Let your favorite principals know how much you appreciate them by sending a thank you message or organizing an event or reminding your children to thank their principal for all they do to support student achievement and keep them safe.
October is Bullying Prevention Month
October is also Bullying Prevention Month. Bullying is widespread in all schools in all places and at all grade levels and is among the most underreported safety problem on American school campuses. Much of the bullying occurs in the form of cyberbullying and spills out onto school campus. Bullying was once thought of as simply a rite of passage or relatively harmless behavior that helps build young people's character and resilience. We now know that bullying has long-lasting harmful effects, for both the victim and the bully. As awareness of the problem grows, especially with reports that in two-thirds of the recent school shootings (for which the shooter was still alive to report) the attackers had previously been bullied, we need to all work together - student, parents, schools - to say no to bullying.
Among the challenges for schools is that students don't always report bullying to their schools or their parents. As a result, the extent of bullying is underestimated. There are many reasons students choose not to report bullying. Fearing retaliation, feeling ashamed, and having no confidence that anything will change if they do report it are the most common reasons for not reporting.
Mental health problems stem from bullying. Stories about bullied teens taking their own lives are too numerous to ignore. It's time to join forces to stop bullying now.
Be an Upstander to Bullying - Not a Bystander
All of our schools participate in the Bullying Prevention Month awareness campaign. Parents can help by talking to your children about reporting bullying if it happens to them. And also about being an "Upstander" if they are ever a bystander to bullying. Learn more in the brief videos below.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mental Health
Bullying Prevention Month is also the time we bring everyone's attention to the mental health crisis among America's youth and the need for parents and schools to focus on social emotional learning (SEL) and mental health support.
Supporting our students' mental health is an indispensable part of our daily work and is implemented as part of a system of mental wellness supports and resources that includes recognizing Bullying Prevention Month as a time to focus and raise awareness about bullying and its harmful effects.
Unity Day is October 19, 2022
