SUMMER MESSAGE FROM DR. BRIAN HELSEL, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Time: The Most Valuable Resource a Person Can Spend!
A well-known American writer once stated, "Itโs strange how time can make a place shrink, make its strangeness ordinary." Older folks can relate to this quote as how you perceive the world around you changes with time. The passing of time is inevitable, but it is how you perceive time that is important. When you are younger, the passing of time seems to be much slower than as an adult. This is a phenomenon experienced by most.
As we turn the page to August 2024, I am sure that many students are getting that feeling of needing to prepare for the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. They may be asking themselves, โWhere did the summer go?โ I know I am. It is understood that we all have different experiences though and may look at the upcoming school year with excitement while others will not.
One of the most challenging changes is for our incoming seventh graders. They are transitioning from being the ruling class of the school building to the youngest students in the school building. Although there will be bumps along the way, seventh grade students are resilient, and many will find that they enjoy the ebb and flow of the junior high setting more than the elementary setting. Before they know it, though, they will be seniors and the incoming kindergarten students of 2024-2025 will be seventh graders. Time does seem to go by so fast.
As you approach the last three weeks of summer before the 2024-2025 school year starts (first student day is August 21, 2024), the Claysburg-Kimmel administrative team encourages each of you to take a deep breath (or two) and focus on โtodayโ and not fret about three weeks from today. Although it is important to plan and be prepared, know that you will one day appreciate living in the moment! Indeed, time is the most valuable resource that a person can spend.
SUMMER MESSAGE FROM MR. RAPTOSH, ASSISTANT TO THE SUPERINTENDENT/SPECIAL SERVICES DIRECTOR
I hope your summer has allowed for rest, laughter, and good health. Let the final weeks of summer be the best that they can be. The start of the school year is approaching, and we are all excited to get things moving.

SUMMER MESSAGE FROM MR. KASSICK, JR/SR HIGH PRINCIPAL
I hope all students, parents and community members are having a refreshing, rejuvenating summer.
The summer for the high school began with the graduation of the class of 2024 at Bulldog Stadium. It was an event that could not have been possible without all
the help of the board of education, administration, community, staff and students. It was a meaningful sendoff to our seniors and a perfect way to kick off our summer, and it will be remembered by many for years to come.
I had the honor and privilege to travel with The CK FBLA to Orlando for the National FBLA convention, and they gave a sendoff to Mr. Walter that truly embrace what CK FBLA is all about. In short: there were approximately 70 national place winners from Pennsylvania, from schools such as Cumberland Valley, Delaware Valley, Hollidaysburg, and a number of others much larger than Claysburg, but we placed 15 of those students on stage. Without Mr. Walter and Mrs. Hudak's guidance, that doesn't happen. CONGRATULATIONS!!
7th grade and New Student Orientation will be held on August 13th, from 5:30 - 7:30. Tours, laptop distribution, as well as basic information will be handled at this event.
First Day of School - August 21, 2024
Picture Day - September 5
We truly are excited for the start of 2024-2025!

We had eight events advance from the preliminaries to finals, and all eight teams placed top ten in the nation. Levi Kennedy placed top ten in a testing event, and Makenzie Ebersole also placed top ten in two events. They set a new CK chapter record with the most placing at nationals.โ He also mentioned, โItโs been a very successful year outside of our competitive events for our chapter. We had two very successful chapter community service projects. Helping Hands donated over $8000 to help Claysburg residents in need, and our middle level community service project, Keep the Beat, resulted in two AEDs at the new athletic complex and having teachers, coaches, and students CPR and AED certified. We are so thankful and blessed for the Claysburg Education Foundation, local businesses, and community support this year to provide these kids with so many opportunities and memories.โ FBLA adopted the theme, โTogether We Achieveโ this year. Our chapter members, along with all the support in this community, achieved!

CK SUMMER STEM CAMP
In June and July, approximately 30 CK students and students from surrounding districts participated in a two-week STEM camp hosted by the Claysburg Education Foundation. Students participated in a variety of activities ranging from learning about sound and painting records, building and flying drones, learning about the science of baking and making a variety of foods, and much more. Students also took a trip to the Penn State Pasto Agricultural Museum where they were met by several master gardeners outside in the demonstration gardens and were taught about companion planting, pollination and water conservation. The inside of the museum taught the students about the history of food preparation and how it has evolved over time. We greatly thank the Claysburg Education Foundation for providing the means to have these events for our students!
ESY
The extended school year program took place for two weeks during the month of July. The students attending ESY had the opportunity to practice the academic and social skills they learned throughout the school year. The program ended with the students having a water day. The students enjoyed jumping through a large octopus sprinkler. Fun was had by all staff and students. Thank you to everyone who participated in the ESY program.
SUMMER READING CAMP
Elementary students had the opportunity to attend four different weeks of reading camp. During their time spent with books, they learned about historical and recent famous people. Students traveled around the United States visiting different landmarks and monuments. In July they traveled to outer space and learned how to โcool their brainsโ in different emotional situations they may encounter. Teachers and students alike had a blast! There were books, puzzles, crafts, and reading skills taught throughout each week.
