GRADUATION ATTIRE INFORMATION
Formal graduation attire, such as caps, gowns, and hoods, represent academic achievement, tradition, and a shared experience among graduates. These items symbolize the culmination of a student's educational journey and the transition from student to graduate. The attire symbolizes academic accomplishment and achievement associated with graduation since the 16th century. Many of these traditions date back to medieval universities in Europe.
Tassels on caps generally symbolize achievement and the completion of the student's academic work. The act of turning the tassel from right to left is a symbolic act marking the transition from student to graduate.
Stoles, sashes, and honor cords can also be worn, adding further layers of meaning and recognition to the graduation attire. These accessories can represent specific achievements and honors.
Regulation 400-10: Commencement Procedures and Ceremonies
Dress Code: Stoles, honor cords and medals bestowed by FCPS or the State of Maryland may be worn during graduation ceremonies. Those bestowed by outside (non-FCPS) organizations or purchased by families may not be worn during the graduation ceremonies.
