What's Happening in English Language Arts Classes
6th- Sixth grade ELA students are reading the memoir by Roald Dahl, Boy: Tales of Childhood. In addition to reviewing literary devices and story elements, kids are expanding their writing repertoire to include narrative writing. Students have been working on incorporating a balance of description, reflection, and dialogue in their stories which are both personal narratives and short fictional stories. We hope you enjoy a few selected stories from students this year below this update.
7th- Seventh graders are wrapped up in the world of the greasers and socs. Students have been hard at work studying characterization and symbolism in The Outsiders. Students will read the dramatic conclusion to the classic coming of age tale and watch the star studded movie after spring break. Our unit will culminate with an argumentative essay where students will have the opportunity to voice their opinion on the relevance of the novel in today's world.
Seventh graders in Ms. Stewart's class have begun learning about the art of argument by debating whether schools should use letter grades or comments. After spring break, they will research and write persuasive essays. Over the last quarter students learned 15 different rules for using commas, wrote two poems, and memorized and recited 20 lines of poetry. Enjoy some of their odes!
8th- Eighth Grade Language Artists are continuing to explore literary themes associated with perseverance and adversity through evaluating and analyzing various pieces of literature.
