December 2024
Principal's Message
December is coming, and we are ready! There will be dress-up days, parties, field trips, and assessments. Due to the busy nature of the season, sometimes schedules and added responsibilities can cause stress. Concerts, parties, family visits and so many other events seem to be packed into a limited amount of time. Scheduling becomes an issue and we always seem to be looking for ways to complete our to-do list. Hopefully, you will find a lot of the information to help you stay updated in this newsletter. We will also send information through text, email, and social media.
We are having a holiday luncheon in December. I want to remind you all to make sure you register even if you may not be able to make it. We do not allow registration on the date of the event. You will only be allowed to attend if you have registered.
If you have any questions about events or activities, please contact the front office. For any questions or concerns, you can reach me at lappel@galenaparkisd.com, or you can schedule an appointment at 832-386-3710.
Have a very merry December!
Dr. Lisa Hamblen

Attendance Awareness
We would like to remind you of the importance of good attendance for all students. It is very important for children to be in school as much as possible. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Too many absences can affect achievement for the absent student. Last year, our attendance was 95.1%. That means our students missed approximately 6 days each. Our goal for this year is 96.1%. This would mean that students miss about 5 days out of the 167 days in the school year. We will be monitoring student attendance closely. We know that you all play an integral role in ensuring your children are present and on time everyday. Lets work together to improve attendance and student success!
Current Totals
1st 6 Weeks Attendance: 96.2% AWESOME!
2nd 6 Weeks Attendance: 95.68% We did better than last year. Let's keep trying to get to our goal!
Absence Reminders
- If your student misses school, please send a note to their teacher or email AttendanceHAV@galenaparkisd.com when they return. If they are absent for more than 3 days, a doctor's note may be required.

Assistant Principal News and Reminders
Safety Updates
First and foremost, thank you for your help in transitioning to implementing our forgotten item/delivery policy. The transition has helped our students become more responsible, limited classroom interruptions, and increased overall safety by limiting visitors and keeping students away from the front vestibule.
Please remember the following:
All forgotten items need to be dropped off before 8:00 am
All birthday treats (store-bought cupcakes/cookies and juice pouches/boxes) need to be dropped off by 8:00 am as well.
Lunches also need to be dropped off by 8:00 am. All students have access to a free lunch from the cafeteria.
Secondly, help us to maintain a safe school by checking your child’s backpack on a daily basis. Please remember, your child’s backpack must be clear or mesh. If you need help getting one please feel free to reach out to the front office and we can provide one. Just in the month of November we have had a student bring a gun magazine and a vape to school. Both of these infractions require suspension of some sort, even if the student has never had an office referral. Students should not bring any weapons, parts of weapons, or toys that resemble a weapon to school. They also should not have any items such as medication, drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, flasks, or vapes in their backpacks.
As always, “If you see something, say something!”
Building Character
We are constantly finding ways to build character in our students. One of the character traits our students can earn House Points for is school pride and citizenship. We want our students to take pride in their school and do their part in helping to maintain school property. Unfortunately, we have had students who have not shown school pride and citizenship in the restrooms. Please help us by speaking to your students about respecting school property and respecting the hard work that our custodians put in on a daily basis. Please see this letter for more information.
House Update
On October 18, 2024, we had a House Rally where we announced our 1st 9 weeks winner. Congratulations to the ARMADILLO HOUSE!!! As a house, they earned 4,957 points during the 1st 9 weeks! Way to go Armadillos!
This month extra points will be given to students who demonstrate fairness. Look at the great tips provided by Ms. Steptoe, so your students can earn extra points for fairness! Additionally, students can earn points for attendance. Being present gets you house points!
Counselor's Corner
We are looking for male volunteers to join the Havard H.E.R.O.S!

For any questions, ideas or concerns contact me at ssteptoe@galenaparkisd.comor call the front office.
Character Education Theme of The Month: Honesty and Integrity

Why is it important to be honest, even when it’s hard?
How does honesty build trust in relationships?
Activity:
Set up a jar and provide slips of paper. Family members write examples of how they showed honesty during the week and place them in the jar.
Reflection:
Share one time when being honest helped you feel proud of yourself.
