February 2024
A Note From Principal Chantal Ligtenberg
Parent Teacher Conferences:
They will be on February 26 and 29. Your classroom teacher will be reaching out to you to set up a time. Additionally, our PTA will be putting on their annual Scholastic Book Fair and will be open during the hours of conferences.
Valentines’ Day:
Before we know it, we will be celebrating another holiday! We have a great number of special deliveries sent to the school and due to the large number of deliveries, these special items are held until the end of the school day to minimize the disruption within the classroom. Please keep this in consideration as the amount of deliveries can be a challenge to our office personnel.
Lost and Found:
We are running out of room to store our lost and found. After our parent/teacher conferences we will have no choice, but to donate the rest of the unclaimed items.
24-25 Classroom Roster Development Form for Parents:
The link below is to a form for parents to share their input on their child’s classroom placement for the 24-25 school year. We seek the input you have, but please know you are unable to request certain teachers. Please ensure you give us your feedback. Once rosters are developed and teachers are assigned, no requests to have a child move to another class will be approved. This input has to be shared annually. All input is due by March 15, 2024
A.L.I.C.E. Drill
Sturgis Elementary students will be having a crisis safety drill on February 7, 2024. This drill, which is referred to as an ALICE drill, is done with the intention of preparing our students for a crisis situation. We conduct two ALICE drills a year as well as four fire drills.
ALICE is the crisis response that Meade School District has adopted. ALICE is an acronym that stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evaluate. The crisis response empowers our students and staff to make the best decision to keep them safe.
The following are the times that each grade level’s drill will be conducted:
Second Grade, 8:35 a.m.
Kindergarten, 8:50 a.m.
First Grade, 9:05 a.m.
Third Grade, 9:20 a.m.
Fourth Grade, 9:35 a.m.
The intent of these drills is not to scare our students, but keep our students safe. If you have any questions, please call me at 605-347-2386 between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
Sincerely,
Chantal Ligtenberg

Volunteering
Educating youth takes a community effort, and because of that the Meade School Board is encouraging parents, guardians and other interested patrons to volunteer their time, knowledge and talents.
Members of the community bring new energies and resources into the schools and expand the walls of the classrooms. School volunteers enrich the educational program and strengthen the schools’ relationships with homes, businesses, public agencies and private institutions. All volunteers in the Meade School District do so without pay or employee benefits, except for workers’ compensation. For those interested in volunteering.
Mail to Meade School District, 1230 Douglas Street, Sturgis, S.D. 57785.
