Farley Elementary School's Weekly Family Update
THOUGHTS and THANKS
Dear Farley Families,
Special thanks this week goes to the over 200 students who walked, biked, or rolled to school on Wednesday. We broke our record from the last year! I loved seeing caregivers, baby siblings, and family pups joining forces to accompany our Farley students to school. Thank you to caregiver volunteers Lainie Dougherty, Christine Sevigny, Lauren Grover and to student volunteer Edgar Grover for helping greet all students upon arrival.
Other heartfelt thanks this week also goes to Grade 2 teacher Ms. Susana Cabrita who is hosting her Portuguese Story Hour "Travel with Books" at the Hudson Public Library again this year. This FREE event, which will take place multiple times throughout the year and is broken up by age groups. The first Story Hour will be held this weekend on October 7th from 10:00am-11:00am. All children in grades K to 2 are welcome. You do NOT have to be part of the Dual Language Program or fluent in Portuguese in order to participate. Registration for this event is recommended. Click here for to register: HUDS.PL/EVENTS. Fliers for the event are also pictured below under the "Walk to School" pictures. Thank you Ms. Susana for sharing your free time on Saturdays with the community!
Don't forget, next Wednesday Home and School is hosting our back to school school Ice Cream Social. This is a FREE event at Farley that will take place from 5:30-7:00pm in the cafeteria. They are still in need of volunteers, so if you can help in any way, please sign up here:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0B4AA5A72DA4FB6-44550184-farleyEvery year my generous in-laws take their children and spouses to Nantucket for this long weekend. My wife's siblings live in other states, so it is a time we all look forward to each year. Together we play cards, do puzzles, walk around town, and catch up on all of our busy lives. They love it when I share funny school stories. I hope you all have a lovely long weekend as well.

September 26, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT BRAIN OF THEIRS? (The Neurobiology of Emotion)
Have you ever wondered what is going on inside your child’s brain? This presentation will use information from the Biosocial Theory to explain how brains react to different interactions and how that affects emotional responses. By understanding where our child is on their “emotion curve” and where we ourselves are on our own “emotion curve” we increase the chances that our responses will lead to more effective interactions. We will discuss different ways to respond to our children to shift their emotion curve and improve communication.
October 3, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT BRAIN OF THEIRS?
(The neurobiology of thinking and behavior) Have you ever wondered what is going on inside your child’s brain? This presentation will use information from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics to explain how stress, environment, and interpersonal connection all shift our brain function and thus our thinking and behaviors. You will learn how to observe and understand behaviors in a different way. We will talk about different things we can do to create an environment and approach that can activate our children’s potential.
October 17, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY
(How do we use an evidence based approach to help our children overcome anxiety)
We will discuss the difference between normal anxiety and anxiety that is clinically problematic. We will also discuss how we as parents can be most helpful to our children and what to look for when looking for effective treatment.
PAW PRINT REWARD STICKERS!
Students get Paw Print Stickers for going above and beyond. When a staff member "catches" them doing something spectacular, they get two stickers-one to wear and one to put on their homeroom Fox poster. When their classroom Fox poster fills up with stickers, they get to have a classroom celebration. If you see a paw print on your child's clothing or backpack, please ask them why they got it.
"ALL THINGS TECHNOLOGY"
Two weeks ago, Ellen Schuck, the Head of Technology for the district, sent out her Technology Newsletter. This publication has essential information about all things related to HPS technology, including how caregivers can access the "ASPEN Parent Portal". Below is the link to her newsletter.
