Principal Wood's Return
Dear Rogers Park Families,
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Rogers Park Elementary (RPE) and am happy to announce that Principal Wood will return on Monday, October 16! Principal Wood is looking forward to seeing her learning community and hearing about all of the wonderful things you've accomplished together.
Here are some RPE highlights:
- Student Council candidates bravely and confidently provided their individual speeches to the student body.
- Classroom elections were held and candidates were voted into office after compiling all of the results.
- Members of the Student Council excitedly assisted with morning announcements to promote last Friday's PTA events.
- Last month, some classes took field trips to enrich their learning through a hands-on experience at the Alaska Botanical Gardens and had an opportunity to learn about the culture of Korea during the Korea Alaska Friendship Concert.
- The ALICE drill was quite a success due to everyone following each of the safety expectations to and from Rogers Park.
I've appreciated getting to know the students, staff and families, and being a participant in Friday's PTA sponsored events, the Jog-A-Thon, and the family night movie, Coco. There was such excitement on the field for the Jog-A-Thon, and the weather held out for all of the groups. Some elder students came to cheer on younger students which was heart warming. I'd like to thank the PTA and each volunteer who helped bring joy to students, staff and families through these fun events. I wish you a terrific remainder of the school year.
With gratitude,
Ms. LoSordo-Santo
Acting Principal
PTA NEWS
Jog-A-Thon 2023
Thank you for joining us on October 6, 2023 for “Running with the Pack,” our sixth annual Jog-A-Thon and big Parent Teacher Association (PTA) fundraiser for the year. The money raised by this event will be used for hands-on materials and classroom supplies, grants to every teacher in the school, support for school clubs and after school events, and much more!
All students who turn in a donation will receive a Jog-A-Thon sticker and be entered into a lottery with a chance to win Moose’s Tooth gift cards, a Great Harvest Bread Company gift, Wild Scoops cards and swag, or school spirit wear. Every student participated by walking or jogging laps for 20 minutes, and it was optional for students to have their laps counted. Online donations are preferred, although cash or check (made out to Rogers Park PTA) is also accepted. Thank you for your support!
This was a fun event for students and their families! We want to thank our caregiver volunteers who helped count laps as kids ran/walked, handed out fruit and water after the kids finished running, and cheered them on!

AK Reads Act Information
Alaska Reads Act
This school year, you will hear a lot more about your child's reading level. This is because of the Alaska Reads Act Legislature that is put in place by the state to improve reading proficiency. We have a new reading curriculum CKLA, Core Knowledge Language Arts. It is rooted in the Science of Reading. Students will have strong phonics instruction and increased Science and Social Studies content within their reading content. We are using a new assessment as well, mClass. This is used to monitor growth in grades K-3. We will be doing regular quick assessments to see growth and choose interventions for students. Part of taking kids where they need to go is recognizing where they are and acknowledging the work that needs to be done. You will be communicated with directly if your child is below reading level. This communication will continue throughout the year and updates will be given on if they make growth. A minimum of 10 interactions will occur as your child is placed on an individual reading plan. During February Conferences the teacher will discuss whether the plan worked and discuss the state's offer to retain a student or progress forward knowing they are not at grade level.
Library
We’ve had a great start to the year in the library. Please help your child remember his/her book(s) on library day.
Students come to the library each week for a lesson and an opportunity for check out. Lessons include information about types of books, genres, research skills, website evaluation and more.
Open check out is from 3:00-3:25 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9:05-9:30 am on Wednesdays. It's going to be a great year in the library!
Reminders for the Drop Off & Pick Up Loop:
- Please only pick students up from the curbside pick up lane. It is extremely dangerous to have students crossing multiple lanes of traffic.
- Please be mindful of your speed as you travel through the pick up lane. Our young running wolves are out and about and we want to be sure they get to their destination safely.
- Students in grades K-3 should not be crossing the crosswalk to the parking lot without an adult. Please accompany your child across the crosswalk when coming to pick them up.
- Thank you for minding the traffic flow of our pick up loop. Please refer to the picture above to review our pick up traffic flow.
- Parents/Guardians who are crossing should cross at either of the two crosswalks. Please do not cut across the moving traffic.
- Please do not park on the cross walk.
- Please do not walk or drive into the bus loop.
- Buses may be late and need to have the driveway clear for a safe student pick-up and departure.
Thank you for making everyone's safety a priority. Teamwork makes the difference.
Late Start Mondays: Students Who Arrive Early
Early arrivals are asked to be dropped off at the front door. Students will sign in at the front office and then they are directed to a learning lab where they will be able to read silently, or complete missing classwork. Staff will monitor students until 9:35 when students are released for breakfast or sent to the playground. Please do not drop students to the playground before 9:35 as adult supervision does not begin until then. Walking students are asked to adjust their arrival time to 9:35, if possible.
