NEWS FROM THE ART STUDIO!
Kindergarten
Faces & Feelings
Inspired by the book “Today I Feel Silly” by Jamie Lee Curtis, and group conversation about our feelings and emotions, Kindergarten artists drew and then painted different portraits with different feelings using black Sharpie and watercolor. We learned how to use different colors to get different skin tones and how to use simple lines and shapes to draw portraits with different feelings.
1st & 1/2s
Henri Matisse Inspired Paper Cut-outs are done!
We learned about how artists tell their stories in different ways. As Henri Matisse said, we drew with scissors to tell our stories and make our Collages.
Currently, we are learning about polar bears, sketching them and making them look 3D by shading them!!
2nd Grade
Current Project:
Birch Trees- 2nd Grade artists learned about the concept of Foreground, Middle-ground and Background in landscape. Students learned and applied different watercolor techniques to mask their trees, blend their COOL and Warm colors, create snowflake textures and make their tree trunks look 3D!! It was FUN!
Past Project:
CUTE CROWS-
Inspired by Crows and their intelligence, and works of Mahboobeh Yazdani and Ms. Golestani’s love of crows, 2nd grade artists created a Mixed-media art learning about CONTRAST in art when choosing their WARM colored papers for the background colors in contrast with their Cool colored painted crows! Students learned about TEXTURE and applied their knowledge in making their backgrounds.
3rd Grade
Polka-Dotted Pumpkin-:
Inspired by the Japanese Contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama, and her love of polka-dots, Lilja's artists painted their pumpkins and made them look 3D by Tinting their colors. We learned about the concept of CONTRAST in art and applied our knowledge by choosing a background color opposite to the pumpkin color and designing the background paper with sharp-edged Geometric shapes in contrast to our round-edged Organic Shaped pumpkins to make our Pumpkins stand out. Kids also decorated their pumpkins with polka-dots using printing technique.
4th Grade
Crows on Fields-
4th grade artists are busy working on their Mixed-Media Unit.
Inspired by the contemporary artist Gareth Lucas and Ms. Golestani’s love of crows,
4th grade artists mixed colors to make Tertiary colored painted papers for the background of their Mixed-media project. It’s been 3 weeks since we are working on drawing and printing our crows. We are very excited to collage our printed crows onto the painted papers in the upcoming week.

Active Kids (formerly BOKS) is a before school physical activity program. Active Kids prepares children for a day of learning and is an important step in helping children gain an appreciation of the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. Active Kids was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book – SPARK. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that, “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled
with team-oriented games and provide plenty of opportunity for play, since the program focuses on fun!
Active Kids will run every Wednesday and Friday morning from 7:40am to 8:20am. Drop off will begin at 7:30. The session starts Wednesday February 28th and ends Friday May 24th.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
At this time of year, we work to determine the number of children who will enter kindergarten at Lilja Elementary School for the coming school year.
Do you have a younger child at home or know someone who does? Will they be five years old by August 31, 2024? Are you a resident of Natick? If so, your child is eligible to start kindergarten this coming fall.
Please fill out the google form to let us know if you will enroll your child in kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year by January 5, 2024.
A quick reminder that the weather is getting chillier each day! We will go out to recess in most weather conditions unless it is dangerous. Please help your child(ren) remember to bring/wear their cold weather gear to school each day, including a hat and gloves. When the snow arrives, in addition to hats and gloves, students will be required to wear snow boots and snow pants in order to play on the playground and fields. If you are in need of support in purchasing cold weather gear for your child(ren) please reach out to Courtney Simoni (csimoni@natickps.org).
