Carleton Washburne

Thank you to the families who stopped by the principal coffee last Wednesday. It was a pleasure meeting with you and hearing about the first few weeks of school from a parent perspective. Washburne students are off to a great start. Teams have implemented consistent practices to help with executive functioning and it has been a joy to watch students happily moving from class to class and settling into their daily routines. Today is our second day of MAP testing at Washburne. Students are testing this morning and we are running a modified schedule for the remainder of the day.

We wanted to bring your attention to a recent trend we’ve been dealing with at lunch, the “one-chip challenge.” Students are bringing a dangerously spicy chip to school and either eating the chip themselves or sharing it with friends. The result has been numerous visits to the nurses office. We are sharing this information with parents so that you can help us discourage this behavior at school. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Wednesday, September 21st is Picture Day at Washburne!

Weather permitting, all grade levels will have their pictures taken outside this year.

Dress:

8th Grade: This is a formal, graduation picture. Students are recommended to wear a dark sports jacket, a white or pastel shirt, and a tie –or-- a dark top and a simple piece of jewelry.

7th Grade: More casual attire is permitted. In general, darker clothing shows well, and shirts with collars are better than those without.

Retakes: Picture retakes will be held on October 18th. Retakes will not be allowed for cosmetic reasons (new hair styles, no braces, new outfits, etc.). They will be permitted for photographic mistakes, such as double exposure, closed eyes, etc., and absences.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

One of our takeaways from the last few years is the value of our outdoor spaces. Even without COVID restrictions, it is beneficial for our students to spent time outside. Last week, students in Ms. Etter’s 7th grade English class spent time in our courtyard reading their companion novels to The Outsiders. Students were able to choose a book that complements The Outsiders with similar themes about identity. Ultimately, the students will write a comparison essay between the two texts.

Kudos to Ms. Etter for designing a thoughtful unit and allowing our students to take advantage of our outdoor space.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

Kinetic Wellness classes are off and running, literally!

After starting the year with some team building activities, each class has moved on to their first instructional units. These units are pickleball, lacrosse, badminton, golf, and an overarching fitness unit. In the fitness unit, students have been introduced to the fitness room and completed multiple fitness tests. Students also have had various opportunities to enjoy a "choice day" in which they could choose from three different activities to be involved with for the period.

Classes will switch through these units (and more) before the end of the first trimester.

FIRST LEGO League Robotics Club takes science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) to the next level. Together, the club will gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping our students build a better future together. As a club, we will engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering through building and programming our own custom LEGO robot that navigates the missions of the Robot Challenge Map. Friendly competition is at the heart of FLL Club as we prepare for the Regional Qualifying Challenge Tournament.

The club will meet Tuesdays after school from 3:30-4:45, in the CW CoLab (N102) with Mr. Selgrat.

Join GSA! The Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA, is a club for the purpose of learning about and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Expect to participate in fun and creative activities pertaining to the community. Plenty of snacks will also be provided! The club is open to anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and will meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 in Maestra Falk’s room (C304), starting on September 20.

Learn how to take your Broadcasting skills to the next level. As a club, we will create broadcast segments for the Washburne community. Whether you want to be in front of the camera or behind the scenes, there is a role for you! No experience is necessary! All you need is an interest and dedication to learn broadcast and video production. Come join Mr. Selgrat and the crew to build your skills using our professionally upgraded studio equipment in the Washburne TV Studio.

Washburne Debate is back for the 2022-2023 school year!

Debate meets after school on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm in Maestra Falk's room (C304). This is a great opportunity for students to hone their research skills, become polished public speakers, and challenge themselves outside of the classroom. Students can compete in after-school tournaments with other New Trier feeder schools a few times throughout the year.

Text for Help is an anonymous reporting tool that individuals can use to report a crisis concern for another person or to seek help for themselves. It was formerly known as Text-A-Tip and is used by several surrounding New Trier Township districts.

Text for Help is connected to local municipalities and resources in order to best support the individual in crisis and keep others safe. Upon calling, users are connected with a licensed social worker within approximately 3 minutes who helps to determine the level of risk, who needs to be contacted, and how to best provide support. It's our hope that our students view this as another resource that they can trust and use when they or someone they know is in crisis to receive help and support.
