March is National Reading Month- Book March Madness!
When Oakview Principal Crystal Allen suggested a Book March Madness competition, library technician Linda Betterman jumped at the challenge! The program mirrors the March Madness program in basketball but uses read-aloud books instead of teams. Linda selected, ordered and processed the sixteen books to be used in the competition and created a large bracket display with pictures of the book covers.
Let the reading begin! Once everything was in place, Linda assigned two books to each class. Through coordination with the classroom teachers, each student listened to the reading of the books in their current bracket and voted on their favorite book. As the month advances, the number of books will dwindle until only two books are left in the “championship” round. All of the students will get to vote to determine the best book in the Book March Madness competition.
Congratulation to Crystal, Linda and all of the students and teachers at Oakview for such a perfect celebration of National Reading Month!

CMS and CHS Math Teachers Visit Bellingham School District
In August Centralia School District hosted Peter Liljedahl, author of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics for math teachers in grades 6th – 12th. High school teachers have continued this work with Daniel Kent, ESD 113 Regional Math Administrator, and 6th – 8th grade teachers have worked with Holly Abbarno, CSD 6th – 8th grade Math Educational Specialist on implementation of routines that strengthen student engagement in rich math tasks. The Bellingham School District has been engaged with this work for several years so we sent a team to learn directly from their teachers and math coach on March 16th at Whatcom Middle School and Squalicum High School. It was a valuable experience to learn directly from teachers engaged in this math and see it in action in their classrooms. The team that attended will share their learning with the rest of the math teachers in their department and determine next steps as they continue to meet the math learning needs of all students.

Tigers Through the Ages
Centralia has a long and proud history of high educational standards. The district was established in July of 1888, when the populace decided an organized, graded school district was needed. C.W. Borst was elected as the first superintendent and classes were held in a one-room school until 1889 when the South School (later referred to as “Lincoln”) was built. In 1890, the North School was completed at the current site of Edison Elementary.
Over the past century, different generations have stepped up and taken responsibility to build and modernize Centralia schools. We have survived earthquakes, major floods and a volcanic eruption. And our citizens continue to support our efforts to provide the children of Centralia with a quality education.
As we enter this new century with a hopeful outlook, we can only imagine what the future holds. But we pledge to continue serving our citizens by providing students with the knowledge and experience necessary to meet a challenging future.
