The Maternal and Child Health Interest Group, the Global Health Work Group, and the Center are co-sponsoring a public health lecture with Ulrick Gaillard, founder of the Batey Relief Alliance. He will talk about the Alliance's humanitarian approach to the needs of the Haitian migrant community in the Dominican Republic. Multiple MCH students have had the opportunity to complete experiences through the Alliance.

This month’s Student Spotlight features Alexandra Gowdy-Jaehnig, who joined the MN Department of Health's Child and Teen Checkups program to help identify challenges in providing health care to incarcerated youth.

To help you get to know our MCH faculty members and highlight their work, the Center staff will begin interviewing faculty for faculty spotlights. The first spotlight will feature Professor Jaime Slaughter-Acey, whose research focuses on environmental and psychosocial factors contributing to women’s health. Leslie Massicotte, a Master's in Education in Human Sexuality student at Widener University, shares experiences from her recent trip to the Dominican Republic. She lead a teacher training for her youth reproductive health program called “BodyTalk.” This post specifically addresses MCH Core Competency 9: Developing Others Through Teaching, Coaching, and Mentoring.

ISSS's Cross-Cultural Discussion Groups are an opportunity to meet other UMN students from a variety of colleges, majors, and nationalities in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. During each group's weekly discussion, you will share cross-cultural experiences and reflect on various topics including friendship/relationships, taboos and stereotypes, culture shock, educational systems around the world, and much more. Several groups are forming, and they are open to all UMN students. Applications are due February 7. If you have any questions, please email isssgrps@umn.edu.

The Health Equity Minor is open to all graduate students in all areas of study who are interested in understanding root causes of health inequalities and exploring solutions to eliminate health inequalities. The minor is the first of its kind among U.S. universities and has both doctoral and master degree options. It equips students with skills and tools to be effective change agents in an increasingly diverse society and provides students with a competitive employment edge.

Each year, the Consortium provides funding for intramural projects related to the societal implications of problems in health, environment, and the life sciences. They have awarded close to $1.5 million since 2000. Funding for the past few years has been to UMN graduate and professional students. Awards are provided as a stipend for research and writing and funding for research supplies, or funding for a program or colloquia for the upcoming summer and/or academic year.

The Office for Multicultural Student Engagement provides opportunities for all students to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of diverse populations. In celebration of Black History Month (February), they've posted many events happening on campus. You can also check out their ongoing programs.

National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine is hosting a Mental Health Webinar Series, co-organized by the Life Course Intervention Research Network and the National Academy of Science’s Forum for Children’s Well-Being, to focus on how mental health disorders develop over the life span. February’s event will focus on Generating a Comprehensive Policy Response to Children’s Changing Mental Health Needs.

This Free North is a documentary produced by TPT (Twin Cities PBS) and the UMN to celebrate the UMN's 50th Anniversary of the African American Studies program. It explores achievements and obstacles in Black history on the UMN–Twin Cities campus and reflects on the people and events that lead to the creation of the program. This documentary examines the influences Black history has had over the years and still has today, both on campus and within the community. Free, but tickets required. Reception to follow screening.

Support your fellow MCH peers as they present their Integrated Learning Experiences!

Every month we’ll send you information on MCH Navigator training organized around the 12 MCH Leadership Competencies. Each competency sits within one of three larger foci areas: self, others, and the community. This month we will focus on Competency #6: Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. Negotiation is a cooperative process in which participants try to find a solution that meets the interests of all parties involved. Conflict Resolution is the process of resolving or managing a dispute by sharing each party's point of view and adequately addressing their interests so they are satisfied with the outcome.

SPH Career Intern Bobbie Morelli and the SPH Careers team collaborated on a piece to help MCH students develop skills related to the MCH professional competencies. This month focuses on four value-based conflict negotiation strategies:

1. Do not mix interests and values while negotiating
2. Engage in relationship-building dialogue
3. Appeal to shared values
4. Confront value differences

PAWS (Pet Away Worry & Stress) sessions feature registered therapy animal teams—including dogs, bunnies, cats, chickens and other therapy animals. Sessions are FREE and open to the University of Minnesota community.
