Former MCH student and current PhD student, J'Mag Karbeah, was honored as a 2019 Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) awardee. J'Mag currently works on projects focusing on birth equity and the impacts of structural racism on maternal stress.

Assistant professor Jaime Slaughter-Acey will be the guest for the next EpiCH Seminar. Her presentation will focus on her research on the influence of skin color on pre-pregnancy body mass index among African American women.

The Center for Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Public Health, along with the Maternal and Child Health MPH Program, is looking to implement a MCH buddy system! Second year students will be paired with first year students, serving as a buddy and a guide through the student's first year in our program. We are currently seeking feedback from distance learners to help us understand how to tailor this program to both on-campus and off-campus students. If interested in offering your valuable insights, please email mch@umn.edu by December 11th.

The Family Planning National Training Center has a 30 minute e-learning course that provides guidance for how to work with medical interpreters while providing family planning services in order to ensure effective communication with all families and clients.

The HRSA TAG is launching a Facebook-based monthly Article Club to engage current and former MCH trainees in active discussion about a variety of MCH topics. Articles will be sourced from non-academic literature and topics will be chosen based on thought-provoking and cross-cutting nature. Discussions will take place in the MCH in Action Facebook group.

Every month we’ll send you information on MCH Navigator training organized around the 12 MCH Leadership Competencies. Each competency sits within one of three larger foci areas: self, others, and the community. This month we will focus on Competency #4: Critical Thinking.

Critical Thinking is the ability to identify and issue or problem, frame it as a specific question, consider it from multiple perspectives, evaluate relevant information, and develop a reasoned resolution.

Starting December 2nd, access to the Health Science Buildings will change. Health Science students are encouraged, but not required, to wear their UCard on them while in the health science buildings. Public entrances and building access hours will change.

Thinking about getting a graduate minor in public health? The SPH minors give students an opportunity to integrate a foundation in public health theories and practice. The SPH offers minors in: American Indian Health and Wellness, Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Global Public Health, Health Equity, Health Services Research, Policy and Administration, and Sexual Health.
