2022 Winterfest Week (March 7 - March 11)

Winterfest Spirit Dress-Up Days:

Monday: PJ Day (Wear cozy pajamas.)

Tuesday: Jersey Day (Wear a sports jersey of your choosing.)

Wednesday: Anything But A Backpack Day (Bring your stuff to school in anything but a backpack. Be creative!)

Introducing A New Tradition: The Winterfest Trophy

Earn Winterfest Trophy Points for your grade by participating in Winterfest Dress-Up Days, Events, and Service Projects. There will be QR Code check-in at each Winterfest event.

This year, we will be selling T-shirts featuring our very own Ava Granger who passed away earlier this year. Students in District 196 will be provided breakfast and lunch at no cost during the 2021-22 school year due to a grant provided by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. All families are still encouraged to complete an Educational Benefits Application, formerly the free and reduced-price meals application. Upon approval, these benefits are extended to Activities/Athletics fees and more. A new application must be submitted each year.

The 2022 All-Night Senior Party is a chemical-free lock-in at EVHS on June 4, 2022 from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am. Students will enjoy a night filled with music, games, activities, food, prizes and more! Each year this party is a highlight for graduating seniors with at least 80% of the class attending.

EVHS College Planning Night - Thursday, March 10, 6:30 PM

The Eastview High School College Planning Night will take place on Thursday, March 10th at 6:30 pm in the Commons area.

This seminar is very timely for families of sophomores and juniors, but all grades are welcome to attend! This informational seminar outlines the process for planning and preparing for a post-high school education.

Topics include EVHS graduation requirements, college visits, choosing a college, college requirements, ACT and SAT testing, and the necessary timelines in the application process. The powerful tools of NAVIANCE, a web-based college and career program, will also be shared.

EVHS Juniors have the opportunity to take the ACT on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Testing begins promptly at 7:45 AM and is expected to end at 11:30 AM. Pre-registration will be done in Advisories on Wednesday, March 16th.

EVHS Sophomores have the opportunity to take the PreACT on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. The PreACT is a practice ACT exam. The PRE-ACT will begin at 7:45 AM and is expected to end at 11:30 AM. Pre-registration will be done on the morning of the test.

There is no fee or pre-registration needed for these exams. There is no makeup test date offered.

What should students bring to the ACT and PreACT?

· An ACT approved graphing calculator

· No. 2 pencils

· Acceptable photo ID

What should students NOT bring? Testing regulations do not allow these items in the testing room and need to be stored elsewhere during the test. Students are encouraged to leave all unnecessary personal items at home on this day.

· Cell phones or iPads

· Any electronic devices that record or make noise

What can students do to prepare before the day of the test?

· Plan to be in school that day. Do not plan appointments or vacations for this date.

· Use their Naviance student account to access Naviance ACT Test Prep for free. Click on Resources to Get Ready from the Naviance homepage. Timed practice tests are available for students there.

· Visit the ACT free practice site located here.

What can students do to prepare for the day of the test?

· Get a full night’s rest and have breakfast (students will receive the option for lunch after the test and be able to request a lunch in their advisory class).

· Arrive early, in advance of the test start time.

· Test proctors will not permit students who arrive late into the testing room.

Bilingual and Multilingual Seals and World Language Certificates are provided to high school graduates who demonstrate the required levels of language proficiency in speaking, writing, reading and listening for languages other than English, including American Sign Language (ASL) and American Indian (indigenous) languages in grades 11 and 12, regardless of how the language was learned. (Bilingual and multilingual seals are awarded upon graduation. World language proficiency certificates can be awarded when students meet proficiency requirements.)

The Bilingual SEALS Exam will take place on Tuesday, April 5th at Eastview High School in the Learning Commons computer labs. (This is scheduled on the same date as the Flexible Learning Day for seniors.) There will be a second test date announced for students who are interested in taking more than one test.

To achieve a seal, students must satisfactorily complete all required English Language Arts credits and demonstrate proficiency in another language through language proficiency assessments approved by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). To achieve a certificate, students must demonstrate proficiency in another language through language proficiency assessments approved by MDE. The assessments are an online test of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The state-approved assessments are:

· American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) Arabic, Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai, and

· Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency Assessments (STAMP) Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional), Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian and Spanish.

· Additional SEALS Exams that are being offered: Oromo, Somali, Amharic, Czech, Dakota/Lakota, Ojibwe, Hmong, Karen, Vietnamese or Tamil.

Students may also be able to receive college credits at a MnSCU (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities) school. (The University of Minnesota is not included in the MnSCU system). The necessary levels of proficiency and recognition are:

• ACTFL Intermediate Low level: World Language Proficiency Certificate and 2 semesters of possible credit
• ACTFL Intermediate High level: Gold Bilingual or Multilingual Seal and 3 semesters of possible credit
• ACTFL Advanced Low level: Platinum Bilingual or Multilingual Seal and 4 semesters of possible credit

Students should stop by the Counseling Office and get a pass to attend the college/university/military Rep Visit prior to the right visit. These university/college or military visits are small group meetings typically lasting 20-30 minutes. These admission reps are often times the same people that review college applications, so it's a great connection for students.

Congratulations to Eastview senior Elizabeth Hallum for being named Eastview High School’s recipient of the Athena Award for 2021-22. The Athena Award is awarded to the “outstanding senior female athlete” in each school. The award is based on excellence in individual sports or for participation and accomplishments in team sports.

In Dance Team, Elizabeth is a six time State Champion and 8 time state medal winner with 4 letter awards, 3 all-conference selections and was named All-State and All-Tournament as a Senior. She was a team captain and recipient of the MADT Senior Academic Award. She was also named “Miss Dance Team Minnesota” for her individual talents in the sport of dance and plans to dance competitively in college. In Track and Field after a COVID cancelled season in 2020, Elizabeth was a State Participant in three events last spring, the 400 meter dash, the 4 X 200 relay and the 4 x 400 relay. She was the Section Runner-up in the 400 meter dash and the SSC Champion with the 4 x 200 Relay and looking forward to another strong season on the track this spring.

Elizabeth will be recognized at the St. Paul Athena Award banquet on Wednesday, April 20th. Congratulations to Elizabeth and all of our Athena Award finalists on such outstanding careers at Eastview and a huge thanks to all of the female sport coaches who helped with the selection process.

NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Most players do not start rugby until high school. Potential new players are welcome to come to practice the first week to learn more before registering.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

For boys who KNOW they plan to play, register in MyPaymentsPlus soon. There is no fee in there, but payments for the season will be collected just before or after spring break.

We're going to have another submissions drive meeting for Voices next Tuesday, March 8th in C331 from 2:45 - 3:15pm. We'd love to have you come; we'll talk about our next submissions drive, take a look at our current submissions in the drop box, and do some planning for layout in the spring.

Our Future Health Professional club (HOSA) is participating in a service project for Luv Michael, an Autism Awareness program that helps those with autism find resources and jobs. Please go here if you are interested in making a donation or would like to learn more about this cause.

Eastview FIRST Robotics Competition team 3042, Cobalt Catalysts, competes in the Northern Lights Regional Qualifier in Duluth this weekend (3/3 - 3/5.) Matches can be watched on Friday and Saturday on one of the FIRST Inspires streams at twitch.tv/firstinspires.

The team is led by Engineering Captain Anthony Brogni, Operations Captain Awa-Bilan Amarreh, Software Lead Poobanaa Selvam, CAD/CNC Lead Chris Enberg, Controls Lead Michael Borg, Manipulators Lead & Drive Coach Alana Wick, Drivetrain Lead Hogan Stirratt, Marketing Communications Lead Bridget Paumen, Strategy Lead Taesun Conners, and Field Elements Lead Andres Orellana.

Current sophomores and current juniors are eligible to complete a candidate form. It is strongly encouraged that the eligible candidate have a cumulative 3.8 GPA or higher.

Optional informational meetings will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:10 AM in C232 and Friday, March 4 at 2:30 PM in C232. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to attend ONE of the meetings.
