A Note from Ms. Ellison
Dear Glen Grove Families,
I hope this message finds you all doing well! It is hard to believe that we are wrapping up the first trimester of learning at Glen Grove!
I wanted to take this opportunity to communicate the importance of school attendance for your child. Getting your child to school on time and regularly is one of the most important things you can do to support your child’s education. When your child shows up on time and regularly, it makes a huge difference in how they progress academically, socially, and emotionally. Additionally, when students are missing, even for portions of the day, it can impact the entire class as the teacher works to catch them up.
The State of Illinois defines students as chronically absent if they have missed ten percent of the school year, regardless of whether they are excused absences. That data is a key piece of our school report card, and last year, we had fifty-five students who were considered chronically absent. This year, we are working hard to improve that attendance data.
Of course, we want students to stay home if they have a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. We also understand that family emergencies and events arise occasionally. However, if your child is well enough to come to school, please work together with us to make sure that they get here.
We are all in this together, and making sure your child can learn and grow is our priority at Glen Grove. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can support your child or family in any way.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison

#BeWell34 News From Our Health Office
As we get closer to flu season, we want to remind families about our health and safety protocols. It is difficult for a child who is not feeling well to learn. It's best for them to stay home until they are well enough to have a positive, productive and healthy school experience. Please keep your child at home if they have:
- Fever (temperature of 100.4°F or greater)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Undiagnosed rash
- Communicable diseases
- Pink eye
- Head lice infestation (live head lice)
Before a student may return to school, he/she must be free of fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours. If a student has been prescribed antibiotic medication for a rash, communicable diseases and/or pink eye they may return to school after completing 24 hours of prescribed medication.
You can find the full attendance policies and absence reporting information on the District 34 website.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER EVERY DAY!
Will it rain? Will it snow? Will the temperature be in 50's or the 20's?
Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!
Please note that if there is snow on the ground, recess is as follows:
- Boots and snowpants - OK to play in the fields
- Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment)
- No boots - must stay on the blacktop
If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.

Returning Library Books on Time
Please help your children remember to return their library books on time. As we approach the holiday season, things can get very busy. We ask that you check in your children to make sure they do not have any overdue books. Books that are overdue more than 30 days by December 1st, will be considered lost. Families will be asked to pay for lost books.
Looking to Help in the Library?
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to shelve books throughout the day. If you have time, we are happy to show you the ins and outs of shelving. You can make your own schedule, it can be once a week or once a month, or any amount of time, we gladly accept any help.
SCIENCE CORNER
3rd grade is quickly approaching the end of our 1st science unit of the school year. Our Gator scientists have recently investigated invisible forces using everyday materials like balloons and magnets. Soon they will be problem-solving at home or in school issues with the help of magnetic force. Our scientist-engineers will be creating videos of their ideas and prototypes, so please ask them all about it as we get closer to our Fall break. Once we come back from school after the holiday weekend, 3rd grade will have transitioned to their next social studies unit.
Our 5th grade chemists have been hard at work making strong observations of different materials and their defining properties. The data they collect will help them to identify the materials used to make up various mystery mixtures. It's detective work meets chemistry in Topic 2! As we get closer to our Fall break, students will be exploring the differences between physical and chemical changes to get them ready for a whole new set of experiments post-break. It's a busy time in science down the 5th grade hallway!
SERVICE CLUB PROJECTS
Glen Grove Service Club is once again collecting NEW and unworn socks for Socktober (and into November to celebrate Socks-giving)! You can help our neighbors in need stay warm this winter.
Did you know that socks are the most requested and yet least donated clothing item at shelters and community closets? There will be a box outside the office to collect donations.
Thanks for your help!
Glen Grove Community Culture Team
Below is the link to the October, 2023 Glen Grove Community Project (GGCP) Newsletter - Remembering Loved Ones. The GGCP is an ongoing initiative to learn about, celebrate, and highlight the traditions and customs of our students and families. We have a vibrant and supportive community, and we enjoy celebrating with them. We have funding this year from the Glenview Education Fund (GEF) to continue our work, and we have many exciting plans for the upcoming school year.
HELPFUL REMINDERS FOR FAMILIES
PLEASE LABEL YOUR STUDENT'S PERSONAL ITEMS
Inevitably, we all misplace things. To assist us in reuniting your student with his or her lost item (water bottle, lunch box, clothing/outerwear, gym shoes, etc), please label items with your students name. It can be first name & last initial or first initial & last name, whatever you prefer. This way, we can be of more assistance with locating lost items and maybe keep our Lost and Found less crowded!
Thank you for your cooperation!
REMEMBER A WATER BOTTLE!
LOST & FOUND IN THE MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM
We already have a healthy collection of items in our Lost & Found. Please encourage your student to check the MPR for any outerwear, water bottle or other missing items.
Parents - when you come to the school, feel free to ask to check the Lost & Found for an item your student may have overlooked. We love to get items back where they belong!
